Need a new laptop/convertable this year and wondering what the minimum requirments are to run VG. IM thinking of either a surface pro 3 with 8gigs ram, or the new surface 3 with 4 gigs. Anyone have experience or knowledge to share would be appreciated.
thanks

I recently felt the urge to upgrade my PC, to improve the iS images and also some other processes that were taking a long time or not performing well. There were some lessons from this exercise, which I thought I’d post, in case anyone else is considering doing the same thing. The last posts that I have found here are old and the website FAQ is unhelpful. This post is not about minimum requirements, but achieving a low-cost optimum.

I wanted a 4K (UHD) monitor, because modern screens are much better than the 10-year-old one that I was running. Not only in terms of resolution, but also brightness and contrast. Could my computer hack it? The original supplier said yes, but the PC needed a new graphics card and some new memory.

Lesson 1: Don’t believe the experts, or the computer specs.

I bought the bits.

Lesson 2: If you are in Europe, check prices across all Amazon’s European sites. The prices vary and Ebay auctions tend to reach the highest market prices. In my case, the monitor was on special offer at Amazon.fr and was cheaper than second-hand ones on Ebay. Price comparison websites are unreliable. Often, but not always, European prices are higher. It makes no difference to shipping costs, because it all comes from a central distribution site. Buying from the US can increase shipping costs and products tend to get waylaid expensively in customs.

The computer started crashing on boot. Disaster. The spec said the motherboard would run 16Gb memory, but in reality it is limited to 4Gb.

Lesson 3: The PC geek forums are brilliant for diagnosing problems. I used sevenforums, because I am running under Windows 7.

Eventually, it worked without the extra memory. It still won’t run iS’ 3k images without flickering, because the cpus are maxed out. 4Gb is sufficient. But running 1080p clips doesn’t matter, because the graphics card/monitor combo seems to interpolate 1080p clips to produce a smooth image, up to 150% magnification. 60Hz is noticeably better than 30Hz and the monitor has a 1ms response.

Lesson 5: Run performance monitors before upgrading. Windows has a decent one, but Afterburner is better (it’s for people who want to overclock their rigs, but fiddling with the settings on an old motherboard is risky, so I just used the monitor). And DriverEasy makes sure the drivers are up to date.

Conclusion: A new 4k monitor is very worthwhile for iS. iS is not memory hungry, at least with a decent graphics card. The clips look great and the increased clarity from 3k is marginal. Some other apps are still memory bound, but I can live with that and the upgrade was half the cost of a replacement PC.

Apologies for a long post, but I thought the lessons were worth passing on.

Thank you @Pantalone for this summary. Can you list your config here please (MB, CPU, graphics card, memory and storage devices) ? So we can see the kind of hardware you're using now and compare with ours ?

I don't know the minimum specs, but some time ago I wrote in another thread:

Long time ago I've had GeForce 8800GT with 1 GB of RAM, then there was GTX 570 with 2 GB RAM and some Radeon with similiar parameters (for short period of time). It was PC with Windows 7, Intel Q6600 (quad-core) and 4GB RAM. I could watch girls, watch fullHD movie and there was some compressions pending in the background. All at the same time without noticable issues.

Now I have GeForce GTX 970 4GB. Always there was only one graphic card in my PC. I'm not playing video games while iStripper is on.

I have an 10-years old 15'' laptop with integrated Intel graphic, some old dual-core Intel processor, 1GB RAM and WinXP. I didn't watch movies or play games at the same time, but old girls were played correctly. By "old" I mean shows recorded in 720p and 1080p. I don't know how 3K/4K shows would look like on such old machine.

Уголок новых участников / suitable video card
what is a good video card to allow for multiple dancers, and a simultaneous video stream?
Maybe this information will be useful.

Can you list your config here please (MB, CPU, graphics card, memory and storage devices) ?

I thought that too many cpu specs would be boring, because the lessons in my previous post apply to most configuration updates, but here goes:

The computer is an AMD Phenom 9350e quad core in a Novatech desktop box, which uses the GeForce 6100PM-M2 chipset, purchased in 2009. The two memory slots each have 2Gb DDR2 800s. The BIOS is the AMI 080015, which is running to its default settings. I tried most of the BIOS options, during my attempts to upgrade the memory to 2 x 4Gb. The disk is the original SATA hard disk, which I was considering upgrading to a faster model (or SSD) until it became clear that it was the cpu that limited my ablity to run the 3k iS format. The old graphics card was a GT220 1Gb, which was never going to support the lovely new Samsung U28E590D 4k UHD monitor, although it worked well with the old 1152x2048 monitor. The new graphics card is an NVIDIA Gigabyte GTX 1050 2Gb - you don't need the 4k model to run iS on a 4k monitor.

Overall, it is evident that iS uses the main cpu to resize the image and that limited cpu capacity causes the image to flicker. A 4k UHD monitor, running at 60Hz on a decent mid-range graphics card, still produces a crisp, clear picture and fluid motion, even with 1080p iS clips.

I hope all this helps and that anybody else trying to upgrade the iS experience can avoid the ***** that I experienced!
