Question about moving VG across hard drives

Last year my old pc had a motherboard failure and so I was ***** to buy a new pc. Because Totem allow you to instal VirtuaGirl onto 2 machines, I didn't lose anything and was able to restore my collection to my new pc's C Drive.

However, that C Drive is now running very low on space. The good news is that I have another larger internal hard drive on my pc that I could, in theory, move my VirtuaGirl instal across to. This would solve my space issues and also allow me to enjoy the forthcoming DeskBabes without worrying about space issues.

My question is, since I have already used up my 'quota' of 2 installations of VirtuaGirl, can I still move my installation and collection across to another internal hard drive within my current pc without losing everything?

Any advice or help would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

I asked a similar question (not exactly the same) to Totem Customer service and they answered to me (and it worked) the following:

If you want the software to install on another hard drive with your models folders, please carefully follow this process:

1/ Very first thing : make sure you remember your username and password.

2/ Now: let's say it was installed on C and you want it on D:
  • Right click the V icon and quit
  • Click on the start button* at the bottom left of your screen
  • go to programs, select VirtuaGirl
  • click uninstall and choose to keep your collection of models.
  • for Vista & Seven click the Windows logo

3/ Now :
  • download and install again.
  • > step 1 : choose the destination of the installation.
At step 3, select "it is my first installation" and let the setup create a new username and password.
  • Then right click the V icon and quit.

4/ Now you need to copy and paste your collection :
  • go and pick it up in C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_PC_USERNAME\Application Data\vghd** : copy the folder "Models".
  • now open D:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_PC_USERNAME\Application Data\vghd** : delete the "models" directory that appears and paste the Models directory you copied from C:.
** For Vista & Seven : \Documents and Settings\YOUR_PC_USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\vghd

5/ Now you need to register your software with your previous username that is associated with the Models you just copied from C. To do so:
  • Click on the start button at the bottom left of your screen (for Vista & Seven click the Windows logo)
  • Select "Run" and type "regedit".***
  • Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Totem/vghd/DLM : look for the file "installID" : double click it and delete the content of the field. Close every thing.
  • Launch VirtuaGirlHD from the start button and register with your initial username & password.

*** For Vista & Seven type "regedit" in the search field directly

Give a bit of time to the software to recover.

I think that it is necessary to uninstall Virtuagirl from the old disk in order to avoid an installatio countdown

I hope this will help you

Thank you JoaXim. By the sounds of things, the method you describe will install both the software and the models directory to my other drive.

If I understand other advice I have kindly received correctly, I can also choose to keep the software installed to C, but move the models directory (i.e. the bit that takes up all the space) to my other drive. I think this is the method Totem's 'Help' section gives (although I am not completely certain).

I'm sure both methods will work, but does anyone know which is preferable? And more importantly, do either of them count as a fresh installation in my Totem maximum quota of two installations?

Sorry to be a nuisance, but thank you once again for any help or advice given.

There may be an altogether neater solution if you are using Vista or 7.

I use Vista (and assume it is there in 7).
I have a second volume (L:), NTFS.
It is mounted on c: users id appdata roaming vghd (with back slashes).

So simply stop vghd, stop the downloader. Copy/move the folders to the new drive. Then create the 'link' / 'mount'. Then start up VGHD again.

Everything under Windows just sees it as part of the C: drive. So need to reconfigure anything. Obviously (at least if you have done it), everything can be access via L: as well. Just remember NOT to let the drive mount at different locations (if it is an external USB).

The software is always installed to your default program folder if I recall correctly. Thus it would tend to be on C:\Program Files or whatever whilst the data could be anywhere.

@snaketibe: Yes it is possible to move just the model directory but you will need to edit your windows registry for this.
Alerte made a utility script to move ones collection this way. I also corrects the registy entry to match the new location. If you find the entry in the registry moving your collection goes like this:
Quit VGHD and make sure the installer also isn't running.
Move your Models and/or Data Folder to the new drive.
Enter the registry and correct the entry for Data Path and Models Path to the new location.
Start VG again. With luck your collection works directly, but sometime only the trailers will be seen but if you entered the right Path a check for news fixes this.
With the method JoaXim describes i really wonder why the heck to install as a new user when reinstalling. And if the support tells the users to edit their registry to delete the installid then they could tell them that the way i describe here also works. I think the above method only serves to raise Totems user numbers.
In the FAQ there is another method described that also works with uninstall and reinstall but without a new user and deleting the installid in the registry.
I copy it here too so you can compare:
"Reach the VGHD Data & Models directories (stored by default in C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER\Application Data\vghd for XP and in C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER\AppData\Roaming\vghd for Vista & Seven), copy and paste them to the other drive which would then be X:\VGHD (where X is your other drive)

Uninstall our software and then reinstall and watch for the option to change the data directory, its not a prompt, just a section on the setup screen.

NB: The uninstall will remove your saved (and encrypted) password, so you either need to have remembered what your account password was or to check on your password thru the Help section.

When you browse to select the drive X, it will display the new destination as X:\\. Do not worry about the second slash. You should then be able to re-update your rights and the models should not be redownloaded."

My suggestions if your not sure about editing the registry:
Use Alertes VGHD-Util Script you find on his website.
http://mapage.noos.fr/cumulus33/INTER/utile.HTM
I just saw he also has a MoveVghd.zip there which might be exactly for this task.
You will not need to uninstall VG for this method. So no risk of not being able to install again and Alerte is very careful with his scripts and tests them thoroughly. So i absolutely trust his work.

@snaketibe

One eeasier methos I tried succesfully to move vghd files to an external disk, needs to "touch" the Register.

You quit VGHD and move your 'data' and 'models' directories to the place you want (you can findthem as Starryk says) and then go to the Register and change the paths adressing to those directories (you find them at HKEY_CURRENT USER /software/Totem/system), But if you are not familiar with the Register it is better for you not to touch it directly. You can do it using an Alertes tool which can be found, as said by Starryk, at:

Thank you everyone once again for all your kind advice and help. I am pleased to report that I have successfully achieved my goal and have now moved my data files onto another hard drive, and VGHD works perfectly once again, so mission accomplished!

Roll on those 700MB Deskbabe releases! ;-)
