It's the money. Ukraine annual income per capita is under $10,000 and most of Russia is worse. The job prospects for a young woman in these countries are pretty bleak, even the well educated ones. Modelling, she'd get to travel and she can, if she wants, combine it with live stripping and/or escorting. A popular model might get several hundred bookings in her career (TheNude.eu keeps count). My knowledge of hourly rates is way out of date, but I'd guess $1,000 per day + ex's. So, a couple of years on a modelling agent's books might buy her a house. After five years she's got enough money to compensate for the poor remuneration at home. Some of them do it to support their families. The downsides of a public face can be managed - girls look different when they don't wear fancy make-up. It's just a job.

There is another idealised way to think of it. Sentimentality, vanity.
A salve to the performers' ego. A fond memory of beauty's glory days.

Totem has been around for quite a long time relative to other
Adult websites. Keeping history of models' work available to their
admirers & fans has always been a large part of the product's appeal.

I imagine many of the retired models may be getting past their
prime photogenically by now. This could be seen as a way of
preserving a vibrant record of their more youthful beauty days.
Could be for sentimental value...a snapshot in time so to speak.

I would expect most models to keep copies of their portfolios, which show off their beauty to it's best advantage. Better than a bunch of film-clips, especially if they're xxx, which they might regard as a bit demeaning. Certainly not something to show the grandchildren!

Also, I don't keep copies of my best work for reasons of sentimentality or vanity. Do people really do that? Actually, scratch that - I made a jolly good cupboard that I kept.

Like I said, it's the money.

I don't know why these ladies take it off, but I'm grateful to be able to watch in my lonely days.
Waiting the lady who make me forget about them once and for all.
Not that i don't like them, but i can't and don't want to be lonely my entire life.
Meantime I appreciate the comfort and support.
Thank you so much to take it off my ladies !!!

Yes money. And sometimes when they retire, they do want to get rid of their past. Sad world indeed.

I don't think it's a sad world - at least not this corner of it. The "right to be forgotten" has never been realistic - you can't erase the past. If somebody has the opportunity to do someting they might regret later, it's their decision whether or not to do it.

Totem contracts apparently work on the basis of revocable Release Notes. The performer agrees to the release of her work on the understanding that the release will be stopped if she changes her mind later and, presumably, returns her fee. I seem to recall that this was ***** on Totem by the legal system several years ago. It's just a contract and nobody ***** her to do it, but a performer can't get rid of her past. All she can do is to stop additional sales.

iStripper is a joyous product. Performers aren't ***** to do what they do and we're not conned into buying something we don't want. Nobody's addictions or other vulnerabilities are exploited and nobody gets ***** or is at risk. The right to obstruct further sales is just a facet of the contract.

There are millions of girls who choose not to accept Totem's money and we'll never see them perform (more's the pity!) I don't see much difference if a set of cards is withdrawn from sale.

@pantalone I agree your point, I had just in mind that most of the ladies appearing on iStripper are more generally working in the adult entertainment business and all companies are not so kind as Totem is.

Ah yes. The adult industry has more than it's fair share of are exploitative individuals (I don't usually use such polite language in this respect, but I don't want to get banned). I imagine the girls have to learn to spot them and avoid them, as do those of us who are consumers. One hopes that most girls retire because they've found their kindly oligarch, rather than because of a bad experience.

Actually, I asked one, once (circumstances witheld). She said that most men are ok really, although the "agencies" did precious little for their money, and it wasn't the problem that the media presented. But then she was bright enough to avoid the idiots - she was working on her doctoral thesis at the time.

@pantalone

My post is actually off topic, since this has nothing to do with iStripper, but just wanted to point out that the problem is not always even the people you meet in the business but the ***** and harsh repercussions you face from people back home.

This is one very tragic example (see 4th comment in the comment window for details):

...not always even the people you meet in the business but the ***** and harsh repercussions you face from people back home...

Fair point and indeed tragic. Working for iStripper, like any other adult website, requires that a performer can manage the backwash. I suspect that many of them cut themselves off from people back home, but that's only based on the odd anecdote. Maybe many of them regret having done it, but most seem to cope - if I thought otherwise I wouldn't want anything to do with adult products or services.
