Poeople are afraid to camplain here? That's a novelty. Is kinda the local sport, lol.

I'm learning the same lesson. Trying to help the masses, I find myself repeating the same advice again and again. There must be a better way to guide new folks over the hurdles. Can the database be indexed?

Things I've learned that are important to know ...
  • when a moderator gives you instructions know that they mean well so be kind to them
  • whatever you post here in the forums can be viewed by all users forever
  • ***** is not tolerated
  • friendliness is rewarded and it's a two-way street
  • if you don't know just ask
  • often the question you post here has been answered somewhere else in the forums
  • when posting questions in the forums remember to come back for the answers
  • the term 'new user' is open to interpretation
  • bronze members (or lower) can be very experienced
  • new users to the forums can be experienced users of the software
  • long time users of the forums can be less experienced than you are
  • although the program offers regular updates, you are not obligated to install them
  • new versions may remove features that you like and want to keep
  • old versions will continue to work with all of the cards currently in your collection
  • support for the older versions will be much more difficult to obtain in the forums
  • new questions about features in older versions may ***** everyone
  • running the software for the first time after a very long absense may need a reset
  • no matter the trouble there is always a solution
  • not all features are documented
  • some features are difficult to find without help
  • some features will only appear when you increase the number or variety of cards in your collection
  • some features are hardware-dependent and won't appear if you lack some sort of extra device (dual monitors)
  • the forum is a valuable reference tool in spite of the fact that it is based on older technology
  • there are free add-ons available which overcome certain shortfalls in the progamming

This isn't quite true. The same number might be used again in future, adding another character to the end to make it unique.

The forums are a wonderful place to learn about the software. Something I learned the hard way, and re-posted here to help others avoid this hurdle....

All users should read the TOS/EULA before posting content to this site. It's better to be safe than sorry. If you're not sure, just ask a moderator before posting the content.

About posting content obtained off-site:

The Golden Rule: All forums forbid pictures that are not from the Totem products. Nudity or not.

The fact that you can download something without paying for it doesn't mean it was made by nobody and that there is nobody owning a copyright.

Only exception is the NUDE GIRLS forum and that one is restricted to a number of approved websites.

If I understood what you want, I could probably help. Are you asking what kinds of files are in the data and models folders? Deleting files in those two folders is not, in general, a good idea. It is better to work through the VG application. I know a fair amount about the file structure used by the VG application on a Mac and nothing about Windows, but I think the two are almost the same.

Hi, Dorsai6

Thanks for your help. The plan here is to post items that you feel might help new users in their learning curve. I've headed it up with a few items that might have helped me, and I've included a few points that I felt might have facilitated my getting up to speed more quickly, had I only known about them sooner. Points not already covered in the new user section of the forum.

Some might think this redundant. I think it has some merit. I could just run across the street and knock a puck around the ice, but this is good sport too!

I was chatting in a thread recently about deleting files not required, but can't find that topic anymore - my poor search skills mainly. In that thread, it was mentioned that certain download files *.dlmcf or something like that, could be removed if they exist as they were simply temporary download files used until the software could determine they were intact and rename them. I was having trouble with something else, and stumbled on this info. I saved a bunch of HD space in the process. It was me turning the download on and off repeatedly, compounded by a messy wireless connection in my hardware setup that caused the files to be left behind as relics.

I was hoping to get a list of those files which are added by downloading a card, but only refering to the models folder. And files someone might download into the scenes folder, or the music folder (mp3's) and such. Anything that a user might want to check for and delete to save space without affecting the performance of the software itself.

This thread might serve as a quick reference to help users who don't really want to share in the forums, but who come here for help. Kindof a research library of sorts, as an extension of the new user forum information in those sticky notes. It might reduce the multiplicity in similar questions coming down the pipe from new users all ***** by the same issue, repeatedly, ad. infinitem.

I see from your profile that this is right up your alley. You may have more thoughts of your own to post here as well. Your experience on the Mac would be welcomed. That's what it's for, my friend. Knock yourself out! ;)

One of the major shortcomings of VG is its documentation, or lack thereof. I would suggest two kinds of messages along the lines you've described.

The first kind would be posted in the new user forum and begin with "How to ". That's what it would be, a description of how to do something with warnings of the risks involved. If all such messages began with "How to" it would make searching and finding easier. An example would be "How to save disk space".

The second kind would begin with "About ". It would describe some feature in detail. It would be something that could be added to the FAQ section of the application and this forum. An example could be "About windows file structure" or "About - Settings - Advanced - Synchronize with server button".

Every so often I think of writing messages like this, but it's a lot of work to do it well and I've been lazy. Wyldanimal has posted a lot of messages in both classes but with a variety of names and usually in response to a larger discussion. It would be great if someone researched his postings and refined and reorganized them a "How to " or "About " messages.

Yes, sir, that's the ultimate goal indeed. With your experience in IT, I couldn't have said it more clearly. I thought to use this thread as a 'worksheet' if you will, and then to create a PDF or some sort of split thread idea as you have so eloquently expressed.

Thanks again for your support and wizardry. It's a work in progress, and may take quite some time to complete or even to fully visualize. I may not even be here before it's completion. Who knows?

----
Dorsai and Rita69 - Collecting and reorganizing WA's posts? Wow! That's a daunting task

My thinking was to create a shorter version than you two have imagined - just enough to get new users 'up to speed' and avoid some early hurdles. I hadn't fully coalesced my thoughts, thinking I'd collect ideas first. If it expands beyond my original, disorganized plan, all the better. I think Dorsai6 hit the nail on the head, with his insightful note that the software lacks documentation of any kind. There isn't even a 'readme.txt' file included with the download. Standard with most downloads (and expected by new users, myself included) is several copies of such files, in various formats (txt, PDF, MSWord), indicating instructions and information such as posted earlier in this thread. These types of documents are indexed in such a way that a user doesn't have to read the entire manuscript, just to figure out if he can use both monitors at the same time, for instance.

The information in the threads, as posted by WyldAnimal, JonC001, and the moderators (all of whom are VG shamen) would be the next step for a new user. My intention was not to replace the information already contained in the sticky notes (and beyond), but to augment them with information excluded from their content. As a new user, I felt I should get this down on paper before I grew through it and forgot my early stumblings with the program. I've come a long way already with their help.

I hadn't considered coaxing Totem to include PDF's and such in the download. Maybe it's on a back burner and coming out with the next release. I wanted to provide an alternative by using the forums. The 'How to...' thread naming convention that Dorsai6 has proposed was beyond my original vision. I like it, and that certainly can be accomplished once we have a model created from this early data collection process. Simple copy/paste from this thread to a newly-created thread is childs' play.

The information I had conceived to include may be technical in nature, but new users don't need to know the inner workings of the software in such detail as described by wizards such as WyldAnimal in his very informative posts. I simply blew past it in my early days, because it wasn't what I was seeking as a new user.

Another thing missing, which I'm sure Dorsai6 has on the tip of his tongue, is a document listing the rules of etiquette for these forums. How to be nice, don't argue with the moderators, that kind of stuff. It's something I noticed right off, when I came in here. It's probably the first thing I was looking for. Not there. Not a whisper. I was afraid to post for that reason alone. To my mind, it should have been the first thing in my face. With the possible exception of 'Hello'.

The master plan is to reduce frustration. If the documentation becomes too massive, poof. I'm back at square one. Hence my first question in this thread, which still hasn't been answered, by the way.

Re: There isn't even a 'readme.txt' file included with the download.

True, but the application and this web site both include the same set of FAQ material. Unfortunately these FAQ's are very limited in scope and often do not address important issues. The application has many hidden features that are not described in the FAQ and can only be discovered by experimentation or by asking questions on this forum. Also, there is no how-to information in the FAQ.

Nearly all programmers, myself included, ***** to do documentation, but it's unprofessional to skimp on it.

I didn't know it either in the beginning. There are pros and cons, which can be listed for new users, perhaps as a link to that topic. JonC001's description and the responses are all relevant. New users might want to know, even if they don't decide until later. Flexibility in the software draws attention, imho. I didn't find this earlier, because I didn't check thru the polls.

Ok - there's another thought. Proper use of the polls....

Further down, Bad4Good has a batch file.....hhmmm. batch files. It doesn't work during transitional periods when updates are coming fast and furious... batch files have limited life.

Here is a very clean, simple example of a how-to topic. The only thing that might be needed is the correct instructions (I might be wrong in this post), and a clean topic title that fits nicely with a series of such names
http://www.virtuagirl.com/forumPost.php?foId=4&ftId=29178
Você não está autorizado a visualizar este tópico ou acessar dados relacionados a este tópico
The topic title currently: progressive hotness
Proposed title might be: About Progressive Hotness
or perhaps: VG for PC 1.2.0.60 Functions - Progressive Hotness
or better yet: About Progressive Hotness v1.2.0.60

or whatever might be decided later, based on the scope of our proposed documentation.

The idea here in this example is to make the search function usable thru careful pre-arranged selection of the topic titles. (it might be case-sensitive)

I would definitely be frustrated by now, if I had posted that topic 2 months ago without an answer. WTF?

Hi, Dorsai6

It never occurred to me to check my recycle bin. The files that are left as relics if a download fails are DLMCDF Files

I had a long list, 10 or 12 files all told, and this was the worst of the bunch:
C:\Users\....\AppData\Local\vghd\models\c0624\c0624_sc2_9502.vghd.dlmcdf 80,357 KB

I guess it was card c0624 causing the biggest trouble for me that day, but there were other cards in that list of 12.

------

I can list out the files in the vghd directory, but don't understand their use in the program. I created the list shown a few posts back from captured data using the dos dir command with switches, re-directing the output to a text file.

Re: File types

I'm a Mac user and I haven't investigated the role of every file type, but here is what I think I know. :)

The models folder contains one folder for every card you own and for every demo you've had on your carrousel (unless you've been deleting folders for demo cards). There is also a folder for skin data, but I'm not sure about the purpose of its contents.

Each card folder in the models folder has two kinds of clip files. The .demo are demos for the carrousel but will also play if you own the card. In addition there are three types of control files. The .vhdshows is present if you own the card and indicates the resolution of the clips. The .vhdtrailers is present for all cards including carrousel demos and also indicates resolution. The vhdp2p control P2P torrent sharing in some way.

The data folder contains control information. There is one folder for every card you own or demo you've loaded. There are also a number of additional folders and file many of which I have never explored.

Each card folder in the data folder has 3-6 files.
x9999_full.png is the carousel image
x9999.jpg is the card image for you collection.
x9999.vhddisabled is a control that is present only if you've disabled the card
x9999.vhdfavorite is a control that is present only if you've marked a card with a heart.
x9999.xml is an XML file containing all the descriptive information about the card including its tags.
x9999_unlock_cache.png is an image used by the buy-me dialog.

the "e" series card have a x999_999999_overview.demo which is probably a demo clip.

I think I understand the following file types that reside in the data folder itself.
demos.log is the log file of you demo activity
demos.lst is a binary list of cards currently on your carrousel
inventory.xml appears to be a consolidation of all the card XML data in one file, but I haven't confirmed it's completeness.

models.list is a binary list of all the cards in you models folder with a wide variety of information about there status including which clips are currently enabled. I've learned how to decode most but not all of this information and you can enable or disable clips by turning a flag bit on or off when VG is shut down. I wrote an AppleScript to do this and it works. If this file is deleted, the VG app will recreate it based on other sources.

Those are the areas I've explored. I can make guesses about other elements of the data folder, but that's all they would be

Hope this helps.

@Dorsai6 Wow. I didn't expect so much detail. It's a lot to absorb all in one breath. You've gone to a lot of trouble. How in blazes did you ever figure all of
this out? Don't answer that.

Oh, I see. P2P depends on some of the files existing in the models folder.

----------------

For this dialogue, let me define a couple of terms for quick identification:
  • (f0) will indicate a models folder containing only the small data files (the demos, the P2P sharing, etc.)
  • (f1) will indicate a models folder containing all of the data after buying a card

This will abbreviate the speech and clean up any ***** in the following as I think out loud. I'm trying to figure out if removing all the f(0) folders will affect the performance of the software:
  • if I delete the (f0) folders, they get replaced next time the girl shows up on the carousel. The model appears as a grey silhouette on the carousel and the demo is downloaded.
  • if I don't delete the (f0) folders, when a girl cycles back to the carousel after a long *****, the software doesn't need to download the demo, because it's already there. No silhouette, no download - immediate playback.
  • if I delete the (f0) folders, and shut off automatic download demos, and shut off automatic play demos, I can save some space and only ***** having silhouettes permanently on my carousel, which I don't use anyway. It used to be a promotional tool, but it makes no difference now. The software can play no demos except the demos contained in the f(1) folders (the cards I own).
  • with no f(0) folders, P2P won't work, at least not for transfering demos onto your neighbour's carousel.

As a gold member (under 100 cards), if I were to quit now and go away, never to enter the site again; I could continue to use the software as a stand-alone and play all the clips that I own. I wouldn't need the (f0) folders, and I would never need an upgrade. Not that I'm planning this, but with 12,000,000 users I can confidently guarantee you someone else has, and another one is contemplating it. I wouldn't keep those empty folders if I didn't need them. They're always in the way, whenever I go looking for stuff with windows explorer. Users need to know this stuff.

---------------------

It's fairly easy to identify which card folders contain a card from the size of the data files. I've been a user for years, but haven't bought many cards. Consequently, I have a large number of folders with very little information in them (ie- I haven't bought that card yet).

Deleting the (f0)'s wouldn't save a lot of space anyway, but a new user might want to do this, considering the vast number of empty folders that exist. A user that will never buy another card might not want them either, even if she was active in the forums and very popular there and planned to stay active for years to come.

To the untrained eye they look like errors, just from their presence. If we decide to include any information about the use of file types in the help files, we had better include this info too.

---------------

If I mark a card with a heart (favourite), the program creates an entire new file on my hard drive to indicate this fact? Unbelievable. Ditto for disabling a card. That's crazy programming logic.

I wonder if the *overview.demo files are the transitions.

Why is there a demos.log file and how big will it get? What is it's purpose, and am I really ever likely to look at it?

Re: -with no f(0) folders, P2P won't work, at least not for transfering demos onto your neighbour's carousel.

It all depends. <grin> If you have demos in your f(1) folders, I'm pretty sure P2P will still work with those cards.

I'm a programmer. I wouldn't do it that way but it is a simple and effective solution. Essentially those files a flags and their cost is just a tiny amount of disk space. The alternative wold be a status file that would probably be harder to maintain.

Re: I wonder if the *overview.demo files are the transitions.

I don't think so. The transitions are in the models folder with an "it" prefix like e0028_it04_38912301.vghd I haven't yet tried to figure out what the numeric codes after the "it" mean.

Re: Why is there a demos.log file and how big will it get? What is it's purpose, and am I really ever likely to look at it?

There have been and still are some problems with the carrousel not working correctly. Totem added this file so we could better report a problem by copying out the relevant part of the log. I have no idea if there is an upper limit to its size.

Re: Carrousel

I and a number of others have requested that Totem modify the VG app so that a user can ***** cards of his choice into the carrousel. That way we can use the carrousel to preview a card before buying. I don't know if Totem has any plan to provide this capability. See the following threads:

The Data folder holds the Assets that are used by the GUI

I used photoshop to Edit the Three Images. so you can see them in the next images.
the Card image... which is a9999c.jpg ( you missed the "c" in your description above )
the full.png - used on the carousel
the Unlock.png Used on the demo tab and the Card View popup.

the Overview.demo is part of the Card View popup as you will see in the next post.

Here is the Demo tab, with the Card I edited Front and Center.
you can see the Three Images that I edited being used.

Next is the Card View popup.
Two of the Images are used there, plus the Overview.demo is Played to give you a sample of the card's animations.

Overview.demo file:
For Any card that you Don't own, and you Have Viewed it's Card through the GUI,
the Data folder for that card is created and an overview.demo file is downloaded.

Go view a card you haven't yet seen..
you will notice a progress bar as this demo file is being downloaded..

and from my example, you can see that If you wanted to, you can really Customize the look of your Assets.

a1660 Cherries Disko Inferno - going to the top of my must-have list. Love the western-style cowboy hat and matching heels ..and everything in between! Her confident sly smile is captivating in this pic.

@Dorsai6- Again I'm amazed by your knowledge and insight. Pushing a card to the carousel on demand gets my vote. I'll review those threads later.
re: crazy programming logic and your response.. mythoughts: a simple flag bit in an already existant file would work and take zero(0) extra space on the HD. (no response to this required - just me thinking outloud, head shaking slowly side to side)
"Those are the areas I've explored. I can make guesses about other elements of the data folder, but that's all they would be. Hope this helps."
Very much so indeed - thank you for the extra effort and for sharing your knowledge.
Totem- starting to make sense to me now, in a foggy bewildering kind of way

@Wyldanimal- I'm blown away by your insight and skills at presentation - Wow!

@MrBeeKeeper said in a PM to me: Perhaps we need a sort of "Technicians section" or "Helping Hand" category in the Forum, 'cause official Help with its simplified FAQs is far from sufficient, and the new users have no idea first about for what all these "stickies" here and there are.

And my reply: You echo an idea proposed by Dorsai, and I have thoughts on this, too. Follow the "sport" thread again, for more ideas like this.

If you read between the lines of MrBee's PM, you will see other ideas embedded in his words not specifically addressed in my words following. Although a frustrated user myself, I can't think of everything and more input is required displaying other user's frustrations and suggested solutions as well. Thank you in advance for ALL suggestions from any source and anyone sharing our passion for Sport.

The database cannot be indexed. But an "Index" topic title can be created. This is the outline of my idea, still in infancy:

This list could be easily sorted Alphabetically, or in groups with sub-headings (for ease of use), in a worksheet off-line then posted (or reposted) until a good useable list exists. We only need a few topics to "get the user started" until his index (in the drop-down search box shown in the screenshot above) is built up from scratch.

An index topic can be set to point to any post, anywhere in ancient history, bringing past very useful information back into the lime light, thereby assisting not only new users, but the Triple Diamonds as well.

An index topic is a "work-around" in and of itself - producing an index to topics throughout the database. It may need updating from time to time as updates are introduced.

References to past features (removed from recent versions) can be indexed as well, for users preferring to stay with an older version of the software and wishing information about an older feature they may be as yet unfamiliar.
-----

Note that the term "new-user" can be interpreted in many ways.

We may need to include instructions on how to enter a thread topic into the drop-down box. You and I are well versed, but we forget quickly the early frustrations of new users as we learn our own "work-arounds" and such the like. We all know that backslashes and plus signs don't work, and post accordingly - new users need to know this up front.

Edit: sorry for all the edits. I was looking for clear language in this post, as not all users have English as their first language and (as I've discovered much to my own chagrin) my own slang can often be (and quite often still is) misleading or misinterpreted in the forums.

This work may seem daunting, and a new version of the forums may be coming down the pipe soon anyway, negating the very need for this index. But it really isn't that much work, and the benefits far outway the frustration, imho. After 15 years, I can't see this being an original idea, and I'm surprised it hasn't been already implemented. Maybe I'm missing something... Anyway, it makes for good sport.

??? There are a limited number of questions that will work, and I can't send an email in my own words. How do I get an answer to an unanticipated question?

I had completely forgotten about this frustration. I haven't used this menu system in about 3 years. I'll never try it again. It doesn't work for me. When I tried to get an answer about UKash, my question in the forum was ignored. I deleted the software and went away.

Here's my question from May 3, 2011:

Espaço para novos usuários / Ukash payment currency not specified
As a free user, this site and the desktop program are phenominal! I want the full meal deal, however..... I won't use a credit card online. Paypal won't back VirtuaGirl as a vendor. My bank is not lis...
As it turns out, I wasn't far off the mark..... :(
Apologies to y'all about calling Miami a state.

Please view screenshots (which are only examples).

1) click customer service
2) click submit a request
3) click any heading
screenshot 1 shows what one gets after clicking a heading
4) click the text of any title
screenshot 2 shows what one gets after clicking the text of a title
5) if necessary, click the button that says "click here to contact us"
screenshot 3 shows what one gets after clicking that button
6) now, type your text (the text box is actually empty until one begins typing into it)

Here's an example of a triple diamond (experienced user) with a tip in the forums (only his 7th posting in the forums). He solved a problem within the wink of an eye.
