I own an iphone 3G, and, to answer your question, it is still somewhat choppy over VNC since it has to send a full screen every refresh. Over a WIFI connection, it's not so bad, but still far from perfect. You can change the color to a lower setting on the iphone app to speed things up, but it really decreases the image quality.
