Why are the ratings vs comments ratio so different?

Some cards say they have hundreds of Votes but barely show a couple of comments...
Is this from people just giving stars and NOT commenting?

I find it hard to believe...

Examples:
Lucy Li / Saddle Up 0232
4.66 Stars (403 Votes)
BUT I can only count 37 comments with a Star Rating. One doesn't have a Star rating, another is 4.5 stars and one is 2 Stars...
All other35 votes are 5 star votes and I don't understand where the 4.66 rating or 403 Votes come from...

Or Izabella / Temperature's Rising 0824
With a rating of ⭐4.66 (256 Votes)
But I only see 49 comments, (Four are 4.5 stars, Two are 4 stars, one is 2 Stars, and two have no rating but they are very good comments...)
That would be 4.37 average stars, or 4.56 not counting the comments without rating...
I don't know how the rating works but the number of votes ain't equal to the number of comments, and the total number of stars...

Kinda get's me thrown off when looking at cards, or shows...

Hope someone can shed some light on this subject...

yes, I am afraid it is true. At least we now are given the total number of votes, until quite recently we did not have that and had to speculate as to why the average rating was so different from that we could see from the visible votes accompanying the comments,

Yeah this becomes a problem sometimes when deciding what cards to buy. Like it would be easier to know why a card gets rated poorly or exceptionally. Sometimes I buy a card and I'm not sure why it gets lower ratings than others.

For example, there are cards that have been rated low this past month and I have to assume its because of the advent calendar so people are getting cards that they dont want but is sort of mixing whether a consumer should buy a card.

Its not an easy fix.

Moreover, as some Team member confirmed, people tend to give as votes only 0 stars (!) and 5 stars. So, the rating system looks to be totally unreliable. Specially during preorder offers as Advent calendar, since not so few people uses to rate 0 stars the offered card(s) they wouldn't have bought.

I rated all my cards, but commented very very few.
Earlier there was an option to sort by Your own rating, hoping it comes back sometime.

Anyway, ratings cannot be very helpful for everyone to make his own choices because everyone taste is different from the others (at least the "average" of all others' tastes). Don't know if my statement is clear... 😲

The rating system only makes me shake my head with most ratings, pretty useless for me and certainly no decision-making aid, just shrugging my shoulders. Do not misunderstand, there are of course very well written reviews, which are a little helpful.
But also e.g. these 0 point ratings if someone had download problems, was not lucky with the game or 1 clip is faulty which will be corrected later ... Facepalm. 😖

@Jack0motto
The number of comments has nothing to do with the number of ratings. You can rate a card at any time without being ***** to comment. I never wrote one because I'm too stupid for that ... 😆

The ratings system is garbage and should be removed as it unfairly punishes certain models / cards. Been saying this for years as its mainly due to ridiculous reasons and nothing is done. The reviews / comments does the job of telling us whats good or bad about a card on their own with the need for the rating. Ignore the rating!! If you like the card and the comments say its good, buy it. I have lots of poorly rated cards that I think are excellent and love them.

I agree. I think iStripper would benefit from adopting the Steam Workshop style of ratings: Thumbs up / Thumbs down; final star rating determined by the like/dislike ratio.

I am not sure of that... since (as Team told us) people already tend to give: 5 stars, if they like; 0 stars, if they dislike. So, it could practically be almost the same...

There is nothing wrong with the rating system. Most people that vote, don't leave a comment. It's a similar situation with when a new movie comes out. Initially the grade of the film could be off set by the fact that fans or ***** are the ones voting first on different movie sites, but eventually in time, as many more votes come in from regular movie goers, the overall grade of the movie will reflect the quality of the movie.

The rating system like it is, reveals more about the taste of the customers, than about the quality of the shows.

@Duras - there are many things wrong with the rating system. The main problem is that different people use it in different ways.

When I did bother to rate my cards I tried to be objective. This meant that for an "average" card was rated as 4.5 stars, a much better than average card was rated at 5 stars and a less than average card would probably be rated as 4 stars. I was trying to rate cards according their own merits rarthe than my particular proclivities.

Others used a very different system - if they liked a card it was rathed as 5 stars, if they didn;t then they rated it as 0 stars. Very often the reason for disliking a card was something trivial such as it being "bare footed" while others would award 0 points for a card not featuring bare footed clips.

Others have awarded cards 0 stars because although they won them via one on the random selection TGIF's they would not have chosen to buy them - i.e. the rating had nothing to do with the merit of the card itself.

In previous years cards have been awarded very low ratings simply because they were part of the advent calendar.

These, and other, differences in the criteria used in rating the cards makes it essentially impossible to assign any meaning to a rating.

The problem is that we can choose our own criteria when awarding a rating rather than there being a uniform system applied by all.

I agree, and this is one of the reasons why these "starpoints" do not affect my buying habits at all. Informative reviews are welcome by me, but I believe my buying preferences are a bit different to many others here:

I now have full collection, but when I was more discerning customer, the decision of whether to buy a card or not to buy a card ***** 100% on the model herself. I have my favourites and there is nothing anyone can say in the review section to stop me from buying a card of my favourite model - nor is there anything to make me decide to buy the card, because "if it's her", I'd buy it anyway. In principle, I would buy the cards of my favourite models if they just sat on their butt on my taskbar and didn't do squat :) I know such cards don't exist, so it's a bit easier to make that statement, but you get my point :)

There are only a handful of models that I have bought cards from just because they are very good dancers / performers and have received very positive reviews about that in the comments section. For me, it's mainly not about ability to perform, but rather who they are.

Generally, my buying decisions have always been based like this:

1. Watch the demos FIRST to see if I like the look of the girl and the outfit. Also to get a basic idea of how she moves.

2. Look at the rating. A good one, after a while (enough votes) generally means that the card was reasonable to pretty good but NOT necessarily so. Same goes for a low rating. If I see a low rating, I wonder why and then go read the comments to find out what was so bad about the card or the model.

As others here have noted, sometimes people give zero rating for stupid little things that others wouldn't be bothered by. Some who are opposed to Totem's policies will just down-vote a card out of spite...

3. I look at the available bonus photos and videos. Of course they give no indication of how good or bad a card might be but I could be swayed one way or the other on this final step.

4. Of course, I, like most people have my favourite models and favourite types of girl. Some cards will always be an instant buy while others are a no go, purely because of the outfit :/

The obvious thing for most people who are discerning buyers rather than collectors is just to buy what you like or THINK you would like!

They are pretty much ALL hot girls anyway who have something going for them...

Colors and tastes... Long time ago I also tried to use ratings to prioritize my purchases but I also was not fully convinced. So I barely used filters. Personnally my two main criterion at the beginning were Big Boobs and Lingerie (ok guys that's personnal 😋) so I was filtering by both, then by one or the other. When I had purchased every possible cards having those criterion, I was picking some other cards sometimes using ratings.

It still surprises me that anyone buys a card based on it's rating when the preview is far more informative.

In previous years cards have been awarded very low ratings simply because they were part of the advent calendar.
Today it happened again with Eva Ginger/Not So Much Shy.
Around 10:00 MET the card became available for the non-calender customers. There had been 60 votes and the average rate was 3.00 stars, which is extremely low.
Was the show not good? I don't know, but I have her two previous cards and those shows are well enough.

So the rating system tells us something of the taste of the calender-buyers and not of the model/show.

It is really stupid how some people give their votes...
  • The card didn't initially download due to technical error, let's give it zero or one stars!
  • The girl didn't remove her heels during a pole scene, let's give her zero or one stars!
  • The girl DID remove her heels during a pole scene, let's give her zero or one stars!
  • I pre-bought 30 cards of this advent calendar, and I didn't want this model to appear. Let's give her zero or one stars!

It is really idiotic.

And since a significant portion of the clientele has thus proven to be idiots, I recommend the entire star system should get rid of. People should be able to give verbose reviews of shows as usual, but these star points... even though they don't play any part in my or many others' purchasing behavior, it should be gone.

Just verbal, open reviews from now on, please. No stars or points, thanks.

Well goddamn, thanks a lot for all your replies!
Cleared a lot of my *****...
But yeah, I like when reviews actually help me to decide wther or not to pick up a acard, but when there's comments like: "Not my thing, 0 stars" or "Game the System, 0 stars" I think that's not fair to the card or useful to anyone...

But when they go into detail and tell how many clips there are, desription of show, and compare it with other cards, I think those reviews are the ones that actually help me decide...
I also have cards that are in my top 10 and I can't figure out why they're so low rated...

I do watch the previews, but sometimes on the comments there will be something written/said that will make me instantly buy it or pass it... Or see it for myself 😜

ANyways, thanks to everyone that took the time to answer my question 😎

@Dfner: I recently had to pull a new guy's post about calling our community, 'idiotic.'

I was trying to be respectful to 'OUR community!'

I'm not usually the guy who pulls punches so thank you for stating the obvious! 😎

Edit:

"Not my thing, 0 stars" or "Game the System, 0 stars" I think that's not fair to the card or useful to anyone...

Exactly. Nuff said.

One way of improving the rating system would be for iStripper to calculate custom ratings for each card to each user by averaging input only from people who have rated other cards similar to how that user did. If I were trying to determine whether I'll like Star Wars episode 9, it would make sense for me gather input primarily from those who shared my feelings about episodes 7 and 8. Likewise, if I wanted to determine whether I'll like any given iStripper card, it would make sense for me to average input only from those who have rated other cards like I have and ignore input from those who have clearly different tastes.

Unfortuntely, although this is technically possible, Totem has a limited staff and there are probably other new features with higher priority. Until a customized ratings are implemented, I encourage iStripper users to provide at least a few words explaining their rating when providing feedback on each card. My thanks to all those who have done so in the past. Reading through those comments has helped me choose good cards and often avoid disappointment.

Colors and tastes... whatever the algorithm used, at last I do not see how to make absolute something that is relative to each individual. We also could imagine to be able to sort cards from most to least downloaded/purchased (only counting volonteer purchase not the one done via random games)...? But again 99% of the users could buy a card and you could dislike it anyway.

Have you ever been recommended a restaurant by one of your best friend ever... and finally being disappointed? I am sure you do.

Seperate ratings for performance, outfit, audio, ect and then agregating them in a total but you can still see and rank the cards by the individual scores if you want to dive in may be a better system and would minimise the "crap audio .. 0 stars" effect. It would also let the team know areas that need improvement.
