I have noted the card ratings of 272 cards, offered consecutively by Totem over the last month or so. Each card already belongs on one page of the entire vghd collection, listed as thirty-two small cards per page in descending popularity. If Totem is indeed offering cards randomly, one might expect roughly eleven cards (272/25) to have been offered from each of the 25 pages. Here are the results....

Page---Card Rating--Number of cards offered from page (number and graphical)

Pp1---------(9.46 )--1---X
Pp2----(9.38-9.45)--9---XXXXXXXXX
Pp3----(9.31-9.37)--7---XXXXXXX
Pp4----(9.27-9.30)--9---XXXXXXXXX
Pp5----(9.22-9.26)--8---XXXXXXXX
Pp6----(9.15-9.21)--7---XXXXXXX
Pp7----(9.11-9.14)--8---XXXXXXXX
Pp8----(9.05-9.10)--8---XXXXXXXX
Pp9----(8.97-9.04)--7---XXXXXXX
Pp10---(8.93-8.96)--9---XXXXXXXXX
Pp11---(8.88-8.92)--11--XXXXXXXXXXX
Pp12---(8.83-8.87)--7---XXXXXXX
Pp13---(8.79-8.82)--9---XXXXXXXXX
Pp14---(8.75-8.78)--8---XXXXXXXX
Pp15---(8.72-8.74)--9---XXXXXXXXX
Pp16---(8.66-8.71)--4---XXXX
Pp17---(8.60-8.65)--6---XXXXXX
Pp18---(8.53-8.59)--6---XXXXXX
Pp19---(8.45-8.52)--5---XXXXX
Pp20---(8.35-8.44)--4---XXXX
Pp21---(8.18-8.34)--8---XXXXXXXX
Pp22---(7.85-8.17)--32--XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Pp23---(7.56-7.84)--37--XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Pp24---(6.85-7.55)--40--XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Pp25---(4.95-6.84)--13--XXXXXXXXXXXXX (Actual)
Pp25-----(32/13)x13=32--XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Adjusted)

NB Re. Pp25: Only 13 cards on this final page. Therefore, the effective number offered to customers by Totem was adjusted by estimation.

There is no space here to submit the raw data, but the results speak for themselves. The eight cards that Totem offers to its customers every day appear heavily biased in favour of the lower scoring cards and biased against the best thirty-two.

TOTEM SHOULD DROP ITS FALSE CLAIM that the eight daily offered cards are selected at random. What we actually observe, is that almost nothing is offered from the first page of thirty-two cards scoring over 9.46 (less than 0.4%, 1 out of 272) and nearly half (44.9%) of the cards offered come from the last four pages.

If "Every day, 8 cards are picked at random..." is false, how would you feel about Totem?

Interesting post, because I always wondered how the cards were skewed. But in saying that, not really that important, at least from my point of view.

I voted form silly - misleading. It is the use of the term "picking at random" that is the problem. On reading that you may think that it is picked putely on a random basis.

However, despite the fact that it is a mistake, it doesn't really lead to reputation damage from my point of view.

I am happy that they are offering so many cards for one ticket, regardless of whether they are picked randomly or not.

In reality Totem didn't need to use the word random at all. All the need to say is: "We picked 8 girls each day...". Most people wouldn't care. I definately wouldn't.

Of course they could be doing it randomly while skewing the result to certain ranges. For example, six from the bottom and two from the top half. It is still random, just not distributed over the whole collection.

I have not voted because although the word random is used nothing is truly random in a computer system due to programming. And to be honest I don't really care how the cards are chosen. If there is a card there not in my collection I will purchase it. My tuppence worth.

Well, guess this needs a little perspective.

First, we had an special offer in the website before when a single card was available at all times. The card was one from the highest ranked and was replaced by another of the same kind. At the time, there were a lot of ***** about the same cards always rotating and many people asking for offers in the middle range and even in the bottom section of the ranks.

After that system was dropped, Totem created the current system adding 7 more cards to that offer. So, the original card offer at the top of the ratings is still rotating randomly and the other spots randomly rotates to offer at some point the rest of the collection, thus giving the buyer a lot more options and not just the top chicks, which proved to be a boring and annoying system before.

Plus, the calendar is back for everyone, the demo rotation, and that counts for another random card everyday and that card is never already in your collection.

So, even though everything can be perfected, maybe a better randomness to see less repetition in the daily 8, i think is a good special offer system and rather a generous one. ;)

It doesn't say "picked at random evenly from all of the available cards", it just says "picked at random". If it's deliberately skewed like that, that's up to Totem. If not, then they may want to fix it.

In this thread REX mentions that there is a Filter involved.

So I guess it's Random from a Filtered selection... Makes Sense
With out knowing the parameters of the filter it's only speculation on how the cards are chosen.

From REX:
"Special offers are chosen randomly. I believe there is a filter on the note they have so only the best ones are shown."

Ah but they are mixing it up. Some of the new girls are on there as well as the old ones, and there are some top rated girls as well as the less popular ones, So I say the system is pretty random, I think the reason we get so many older cards is there are more of the less popular cards than the new ones.

Sorry but the evidence simply doesn't back those last two posts.

In the month of September so far we've had 15 days, 8 specials a day, makes 120 total.

Cards 1-100 have come up 32 times (over a quarter)
101-200: 14
201-300: 10
301-400: 8
401-500: 14
501-600: 14
601-700: 11
701-800: 10
801-900: 5
901 : 2

Random? Hardly.

'I think the reason we get so many older cards is there are more of the less popular cards than the new ones.' This totally backs the OP's point: the specials are biased to offering less popular cards.

As we can all see there are actually fewer cards in the range 1-100, only 82 in fact, yet these (less than 10% of all the VG cards available) consistently make up more than a quarter of all the specials offered.

If a company says something is random then it should deliver on that statement.
