This evening, I have received two friend requests from people I have never had contact with before. One has bought cards, the other hasn't. I NEVER add friends without at least some previous contact in the forum. I would advise everybody to do likewise. If you receive a friend request from a stranger, check out their profile and if there is no info there and they have no cards, I would advise refusing it. If they have bought cards, send them a PM asking who they are and why do they want to be your friend. Be polite but don't tell them anything personal.

I'm just saying, be CAREFUL. :)

In very rare cases you'll receive an answer to your question or a hello note from those friend candidates.
Some members just collect friends as others collect cards seems to me .. the more nice avatars on their friends list or the bigger it is, the better. Size matters - especially for females };-))
Some dudes on the other hand try to friend with the guys, who are active, well known and have a good reputation in the forum. Perhaps it gives more self-confidence and trustworthiness to one, if he has some "famous friends" out there, who knows .. But "friend" doesn't mean really a friend anymore - the values are devalued - and that's pity.

Yep, be careful, and if there's anything suspicious with the profile (a member since 2009 - 2010 .. for example, but still no cards, no posts, no friends .. nothing at all), it definitely smells fishy - might be an hacked account as well. So it would not ***** also to report a mod, methinks, if the whole thing doesn't seem quite right.

People tend to send out friend requests for many different reasons.

Some are active in the forum. Some not so much. They'll have anywhere between no cards to all of them.

Just a few reasons........

Some members see this as kinda like Facebook and just want as many people on their friends list as they can get. Every once in a while, you'll see someone that just joined sending out friend requests to nearly everyone. Sometimes, you'll see someone that's never been active in the forum even though they've been a member for many years suddenly deciding they want some friends. There's no ***** in that.

Some people will watch the forum, whether they're active in it or not, and send requests out to members they believe they may have similar interests with. Maybe a member will send a request to someone who opened a thread they like. Maybe they'll send a request based on just a few posts that make them think you have similar views.

I believe those are the two most common reasons......
1) Just to amass a large list of friends.
2) Thinking you may have similar interests.

Yes......Some will send out requests to those they believe have influence or hold a position of power, so to speak, as to try to appear to be influential themselves.

It's up to each individual to decide whether they wish to accept requests or not and what ever reason they may have is theirs alone. Requiring no explanation.

Anyway, there's really no ***** in accepting friend requests. It's just a list that allows you to have an easier way to find someone you may wish to talk to through PM's. It's not like anyone can actually stalk you here.

I shouldn't have to tell anyone that we shouldn't give any personal info to anyone we're not absolutely sure of.

You can accept a friend request and then cancel it if you feel justified....no ***** done...
Intuition will tell you who are your real friends, and some "reputable" members still have known banned Trolls on their friends list...:@

@Rita69,
Yeah, that one would go into most common reason 2). Thinking you may have similar interests. Incorrectly so, in many cases. Potential similar interests could be anything.
;-)

Well, as I mentioned, there are many reasons for sending out friend requests. I only named a few. Many can be preceded or followed by PM's. Unsolicited and unwelcome PM's at times.

If anyone feels they've received offensive PM's, Blacklisting to prevent any more is a good option. The T&C's DO apply to PM's as well so, if you feel the need to let a Moderator know of some PM's you've received, don't hesitate to do so. It would be good for us to know if a particular member is sending out a large number of offensive PM's. Preventing them from sending any more out IS something we can do.

Hebasu is that correct, because I reported to another mod a member of this forum not very long ago for sending me an offensvie pm and was told they were not covered under the T&C's, which I of course disagree with as I see it as *****, but i'll be happy to send you a copy of that pm ;)

and i'll add, I don't think any member should be able to PM another member unless that member is on their friends list, If I wanted then to correspond with someone or they wanted to correspond with me we would first have to send a friend request and have it accepted, in my case I would never have accepted this member as a friend so therefore would not have ever received the ***** PM him!

If the member tried to add me as a friend i could blacklist him without the need to ever correspond ;)

Well, seems pretty clear to me that the rules do apply.

Yes, your idea of only being able to send PM's to member's who have chosen to accept a friend request before hand would be very useful for preventing unwanted PM's being sent to you.

--- "I don't think any member should be able to PM another member unless that member is on their friends list.." ---- Vixen01 says.

Agree .. Because it's quite tricky to stop a member, who has uncountable number of free accounts, from posting *****. Even for mods. Blacklist him, and he/she'll be back very soon under the different name, doing the same - harassing you with the full impunity. And you can't get the guy to the black list either before you have received a message from him ..
That's my own experience - a Spanish one.
Members with zero cards in collection can't participate in forums, but they can freely PM to anyone and anything they want.

well,I don't see any ***** by receiving or sending friends request,as long as no body ask for real names, home address or bank info, besides if someone really wants to ***** someone I highly question he or she will try to talk to anyone, and if anybody is worried about hacking accounts no one is going to ask for permission.I'm speaking from experience,a few years ago I got my bank account along with others hack and empty in a matter of minutes,if someone can hack a bank surely can hack this site and you will be the last to know.

Whoa! I didn't expect all this! I posted in this section to warn new members that there are shady people around, even in VG forums.

@Buzzy: I think I've had the same one as you before too. I simply blacklisted him as well :)

@Vevince0: I agree with you. However, if I want to send a friend request, I will include a PM, explaining the reasons why. Is that too much to ask for?

Vixen01 says that we shouldn't be able to PM members not on our friends list. With respect, I don't think that's a good idea. I'm sorry for people who have received ***** PM's but as a wise Mod once told me, they are just words on a web page. Don't take them so seriously. I've learned my lessons here :)

Sometimes you want to say something in private, in response to a member's post that would not be appropriate in public. I don't mean negative but something that maybe should be just private. So blocking PM's without being a friend would stunt communication. If it's a new or fairly new member asking for a friend request then one might refuse them and their message won't get through. It might have been informative and helpful or even make you a friend for life!

All I wanted to say with this post was to be careful. Blocking communication in a public forum, to me, is not such a good idea.

Unwanted PM's and or Friends requests.
Please do forward your PM's and Complaints to the MOD's
We do look into every one...

In General, unless you ask for Confidentiality, your Complaint is discussed in the Team / MOD's forum with the other MOD's and Team members.

REX and Celine are an Active part of these Discussions.
Often letting the MOD's know that it's not a punishable *****.

So if you've *****, and it didn't seem like any action was taken.
It could mean that Totem decided it wasn't a ***** that warranted a punishment.

Vixen01's suggestion of not allowing PM's from members who aren't already accepted on your Friends list has merits for the General members, but Not for being a MOD.
as a MOD we have to be able to receive PM's from all members.

But truthfully..

We are all Adults and should be able to handle our own Adult Conversations that take place via PM.

If you get an unwanted PM.
ignore it, delete it, and blacklist the member..

that's how I would handle it..

What difference does having someone on your friends list really make anyways? How is it dangerous to anything if you accept them? Does it give them some kind of special ability that I'm not aware of? I always though friends on this site was nothing more than a list of names and avatars on your friends page of this website. What ***** is there is having that list be a name or two longer? Am I missing something here?

Nearly everyone on my friend's list is someone who's contacted me about my reviews of cards or interacted with me in the forums. I don't actively look for people to "friend" here myself, but I understand the motivation some have. Someone on your friend list who is active here can be more easily followed in order to see what comments are made and what they have to say about things. Using caution is OK, but honestly, since the forum isn't link to anything really, I doubt it makes much difference.

@DrenDor: Probably makes no difference whatsoever, here on VG. My point was that if someone wants to be your friend with no previous contact, one should question their motives. Most are probably innocent.

I've had two email accounts and my old Facebook account hacked. I don't use any of them any more. All of those things caused me problems. Call me paranoid if you like, guys. Now I'm just very careful with my friends :)

lol, well I agree with HombreSinSombra. I received without accepting friends requests messages to provide my login information and to give some girls away.
Off course I didn't payed attention to this as Wyldanimal suggested.

But to advise members can't be of any *****. And never provided any personal information.

Enjoy the Sunday folks!

My experience:

I am in the VG forum since April this year and so far I have received only two friend requests from people that have never written or talked me.
Nothing happened strange or dangerous, so I just thought that they had made me a friend request only for statistical purposes.

Have a good Sunday!

Well fair enough, I agree it is very good general advice for sure, I just was scratching my head trying to figure out what was so dangerous about it on this site...

I will have to agree with everyone, on this topic. Be a little cautious about friend requests from other members. If you do not want some one to be a friend, then throw away the friend request. No *****, no foul. I find it real simple, about friend requests. Duh. Davrwei062179 out.

I just recently sent out friend requests to other members. These members, I have had discussions with on topics here at virtuagirl. Some accept, and some don't. I agree with the others on this topic, if you get a friend request from someone you don't know, or gotten into a discussion with this person. I say, go with your gut feeling then make the decision to accept or decline the friend request.😄.

==========
I think this covers the topic in a nutshell. I have accepted friend requests here with no ***** of being stalked, but I'm a guy. Not subject to the advances of men on here. Women need not worry either, as being a friend on here does not increase your chances of being stalked. Any user can PM any other user, friend or not.

Others here have talked of facebook being different. It is and it isn't. I only use facebook to communicate with my family, and my privacy levels are fairly high there. I have had friend requests there, and simply ignore them. Here, it makes no difference if you befriend someone or not. Being a friend does not give premium access to any personal information. This site is safe. Your fingers and your keyboard may not be. Just don't reveal anything personal and they are no closer to causing you any ***** than they were yesterday.

If you get a PM that is offensive, simply blacklist the sender, and send a PM to a moderator. If you are embarrassed, ask the moderator to keep it on the QT. NOBODY ELSE WILL KNOW EXCEPT THE MODERATOR YOU CONTACT PERSONALLY. It will be dealt with swiftly and quietly. You can rest assured. Friend or not.

I use my friend's list here to find people quickly that I want to chat with. I can see no other purpose for that list. But I have friends on my list that I haven't had any contact with in a very long time. Maybe it was only once that I chatted privately with them. I see no need to remove them from my friends list. Why? There's no advantage or disadvantage either way.

You're all making a mountain out of a mole hill. Use the friend's list to your own advantage, and for your own purposes. You don't need to worry about someone abusing it, because there is no way that they can!

A real friend is something quite different:

One advantage to having friends, is the ability to 'chat' with others when online simultaneously. It's quicker than passing notes back and forth while collaborating on topics and posts.

Another possible advantage.... if I leave the forums for an extended period of time, and one day return, my former friends names (which I may have forgotten after an *****) will be readily available on my return. Whether or not the friends will still be active is another issue again.

I think I know what Hobre Sin Sombra, and Chaotic Evil are talking about. They both got friend requests from some new members. These members either had no cards, or had no contact with these new members. That's all that was said in the 1st two posts. I hope this clarifies this. They both want friends, they both have had contact with in the forums.
