Hello there,
i just thought about something and maybe someone can give me an answer here.
These new 3K cards, do we actually need a monitor with 3K resolution to see any visual effect compared to the old 1080p resolutions ?.
Does it even make sense to actually download the new cards in that resolution for not 3K monitors or should i just download the same cards in 1080p ?.

The Raw 4K recording is Much Crisper, Clearer, and better color saturation.
So all of the Clip resolutions will show an Improvement.
If you Don't have a 3K monitor, I doubt you will notice a difference
between the 1080p and the 3K clip.
And Actually the 3k clips will have more of a CPU load vs the 1080p or 720p clip size.
Your playback will always be reducing the 3K clip size on the fly - Using More CPU cycles.
So it is still best to Download the Cards in a Size that will match your Screen.
So all of the Clip resolutions will show an Improvement.
If you Don't have a 3K monitor, I doubt you will notice a difference
between the 1080p and the 3K clip.

If only people with a high resolution screen can really benefit from the 3k cards, I find the price of such card quite unfair for all the people enjoying VG girls on their laptop or any other lower resolution screen, as eveyrone will pay for the 3k quality whether (s)he can use it or not..
Why, for such kind of card, not proposing a price if the card is downloaded in 3k and a reduced price (ie same as for 1080p cards) for the ones who download the card in 1080 or 720 ?

How about, I vote for Totem to NOT release the 3K cards in Less than 3K..

Sure would be a LOT less work for the Team... Not to have to Encode the card 3 different ways..
Then you'd all be belly aching about why aren't the cards in lower resolutions..
Besides, if and when you do get a higher resolution screen, you already have paid for the card..
if the lower resolutions cost less, and then you had to PAY again when you wanted 3K, you'd ***** about thart too..

A couple of months ago, when all this new fangled stuff came out, I downloaded everything new in 3K. Later, I realised that it was taking up a ton of space for each card on my external hard-drive. I was amazed by the quality though.
At the time, WA said that we should download according to the max resolution of our monitors/TV's. No point wasting hd space, right?
My TV/monitor is a standard 40 inch 1080P. (1920 x 1080). Yes, you can get 1080P on a much smaller screen but please bear with me...
To test this, I deleted a couple of 3K cards and downloaded in 1080P versions. Soon after, I updated back to 3K for those cards.
My conclusions were that, on a smallish screen, one would probably not notice any difference. On a good sized screen, the 3K versions are a little crisper.
So, if you have a decent sized monitor/TV, your decision is then over hard-drive space.
And, as Beast says, you can always upgrade your card in the future when you have a better resolution screen and maybe a bigger hard-drive😉

I don't have problem to pay more for new technology IF this new technology enhances my user experience, otherwise, this is just marketing blahblah. Since I am not using those big screens which would benefit from the 3k quality, I think this was my right to make the here above post. This is not ***** for the sake of *****, but just ensure to pay for what I consume.
And to make things clear, I wouldn't have any problem at all to pay a delta to get a better clip quality when I get the opportunity to enjoy the cards on a bigger screen.

This is not ***** for the sake of *****, but just ensure to pay for what I consume.I've got three displays on my Mac Pro. I normally keep VG on my main 2560 X 1600 display. However, I often run in on my #2 1920 X 1080 display and sometimes on my #3 1024 X 768 display. In my opinion, the 3K click are higher quality than the older cards when shown on all 3 displays, but I don't know if there is any advantage to having them in 3K resolution on the smaller displays. Bottom line: The extra charge you pay for 3K buys you higher quality even in 1080 or 720 resolution, but the pay off is greatest on a large monitor in 3K resolution.

Running multiple monitors is pretty easy now. Virtually any add in video card will do it and I used to run multiple monitors before i got my 4k screen. Then I went to just a single as the amount of space is ridiculous. Of course now I'm considering a second 4k screen...
And yes the 3k clips look better than any of the other clip types on a 4k screen when played at full clip res and even more so when expanded to fill the 4k screen. But what you're really paying more for is the increase in quality at any resolution that the new shows have. Don't think of it as paying for 3k that you'll never use, but just paying more for better overall results.

Didn't mean to Direct all that at you. But your post just pushed that button..
I see you have a few of the 3K cards..
So lets try an expiriment..
If you know how to rename folders - Keeping differnet resolutions of the same card is pretty easy.
I do it for QA when I test a card in the Different resolutions.
1) Download the card
2) after it's downloaded Rename the folder and tag it with its resolution.
3) in the GUI, select one of the Other Resolution for that card, and redownload it.
Example:
e0086 is a 3k card with all 3 resolutions, 3K, 1080p, 720p
So I download the 3k version.
after it is done, rename the Models folder to e0086-3K
then I slect 1080p on the card- and it downloads that version. creating a New e0086 folder.
rename that folder to e0086-1080
then select the 720p version to download it again.
Now Play a couple clips in 720p
rename the folder to e0086-720
name the e0086-1080 back to e0086
Now Play a few 1080p clips ( no need to rebuild or do anything other than rename the folders )
then rename e0086 back to e0086-1080
and name e0086-3k to e0086
Now play a few 3K clips.
It's the clips in the folder that determines what resolution.
Just remember that The GUI will still Show the LAST version downloaded.
( it doesn't know you changed the folders )
But you can just reanme the folders, and play what resolution clips are in that folder.
This way you can quickly compare..
I think you will see, that even the 720p clips are much improved.

This is an assumption, and is simply untrue, imho. My resolution may be one of the lowest of any user on this site, and I enjoy many benefits that come with the 3K cards. Other users have commented in terms of hardware and requirements, and various configurations of same. My angle goes a completely different way, and may help you to understand why I would choose a 3K card over a card offering only the lower resolutions. It's not technical at all, but the new features that come with the 3K cards that I will explain from my point of view.

- The new cards come with more than just the standard clips. Included are clips called transitions which have the girl dangling from her hands, doing spins, spider-man like landings in high heels, and other fun, random actions that give variety to the clips, thereby extending the enjoyment beyond the earlier versions.
- The new cards are much more clearly displayed, in crisper focus, than the earlier versions. I only dl the 1080k versions of the 3K cards, and my monitor displays only 1280x1024 but the clips are noticeably sharper. I can capture a screen, and view it with my picture viewer, zooming in almost twice as close as the earlier versions, while still being able to see the finer details.
- I've been wrong before, but I believe the same is true for the bonus videos, which are available for separate download. Note that not all cards (3K or otherwise) have bonus videos. (shrug)
- The sound quality of the clips, and the bonus videos appears to be better.

Just for the precision, are you telling me to compare clips of the same card but in different resolution ... or clips of a 3k card in a given resolution compared to clips of a 1080p or 720p resolution ?
In this last case, making the comparison would imply that the clips of any card with a given resolution have the same quality, which I am not that sure. I remind feedback of members regarding some specific cards whose quality wasn't the one expected ... but maybe this has been fixed in the meanwhile.
For the first case, I will wait a couple of days that I buy the ethernet connector. I am not sure if this is linked to the wifi connectivity of my new mac but the donwload speed is quite creepy (I have tried to download back some old cards which are only around 160 MB ... so sloooow)

They run perfectly well at 1080p resolution (bit of sound stutter)... I haven't tested a 3K card at 780p yet, which will likely solve that issue for me, and WyldAnimal assures me it's no difference in picture quality... I read somewhere (a sticky maybe - easy to find) where Rex described the new encoding software in glowing terms...4K encoding???

If you think your every going to go 3K I would start downloading the cards little by little. I only had my 768p laptop screen @the time and I converted my entire 720p collection to 1080p. Glad I did because the last gen 1080p looks great. I am still blow away with the quality of the mid 600 to 800 cards that were produced in 720p. The quality and color holds up very well to the new 1080p cards that are released. This is my current setup. The laptop runs too good to just use as a laptop and I have upgraded the CPU and wifi to the latest and greatest.

@RadioChango 3k is the marketing name for cards from the latest generation. The name focuses on the resolution of the card but what have changed involves way more, from more expensive models, better outfits and accessories and lots of post-production cost to make the images as beautifull as they are, in 720p, 1080p and 3K. I understand it's missleading if you don't need the 3k resolution yet, but there is way more than that in the new cards. See the posts when we republish older cards with the new post production chain, the is no question about the quality improvement no matter which resolution you download.
As for downloading 3K cards when you monitor height is only 1080 pixels, it's a waste of hard drive space AND CPU. Switching to a better resolution is free, wait till it makes sense ;)

I have finally made the test with Viola's card f0042
First of all, I precise I run my MacBook pro with 1680x1050 resolution
In term of quality, I don't really see noticeable differences between the card with 3k resolution and with 1080p resolution ... both variants are really neat ... great stuff
I thought that maybe the image in the 3k resolution variant would be a bit bigger, but the image looks to have the same size in both variants.
Conclusion : my initial statement that the 3k variant of the newest cards is useless to me in then confirmed. I perfectly agree with Rex's last paragraph.
Second try, I wanted to compare cards in 1080p resolution between cards that also offer 3k resolution and cards that don't. To minimize the potential variation in term of quality between one card and another, I have considered cards from the same shooting session. In my case Anna Tatu a1549 to a1554, knowing that all of them provide only 720p / 1080p, except a1551 which has been reworked to offer 720p / 1080p / 3k.
The result is that the image of a1551 looks sharper than the one in the other cards, providing thinner details. This can be observed in particular in Anna's hair.
So in the end, even if 3k resolution clips are uselss on my laptop, it seems the quality of 1080p variant of the 3k cards has been improved.
Of course this has been observed only on one card and would certainly need to be confirmed with other cards, but I must however admit my initial statement was not that accurate.
