Two workstations at home.
Both WiFi.

I'm thinking about adding and external drive to my WiFi router that supports it.
Both workstation could then access this drive for iStripper files.

Anyone using such a setup?
Comments?

-----
WiFi in house 100 feet or so from workshop.

Good day I'm doing 40 Mbps (Internet download) from my workshop.
Bad weather & windy day it may go down to 20 Mbps.

My collection is on a NAS device. My Laptop connect to it via Wifi.

Turn off Streaming of clips.
It take a few seconds to Load the Clip into Memory, So there is a delay between one clip ending and the next clip starting..

Other than that...

Works, flawlessly.

PS.
Each pc, has it's own Data Folder.

This was each one can have it's own Active and Deactivated clips.
Plus it's own Skin, and Custom Cards...

All the Models are shared.
but the Data folders are Separate.

On the Lap top they are in the Local User profile, The Default location.

On the Desktop they are on the NAS in It's own Folder (have to edit the path in the registry for that )

The Laptop has Two Model folder Paths.
Sometimes Three.

1) the Shared NAS
2) the Default Local location
3) a USB thumb drive

If I take the Lap top on the road...
I can put a few Favorite Cards on the Thumb drive and take them with me.
Plus I keep a few on the Local drive as well.

I keep multiple REGISTRY files with the different Path setups.

That way, All I need to do is Double Click on a registry file to load up the correct registry settings.

You Must QUIT iStripper before you make a registry change for a different account use.

I also have several Test accounts, So I'm for ever changing the registry setting if I want to test with a Free user account, or a Silver user, or Gold etc...

For the Other Account they must have their Own set of Data and Models Folders.
You CAN'T share downloaded Model files between different accounts.

It's not that big of a deal to have test accounts for the Different levels Below Diamond.
Between the Test Accounts you can do it with 154 cards in Total..

A free member has Zero cards
A Bronze member has 1 card
A Silver Account needs 11 cards
A Gold Account needs 41 cards
A Platinum Account needs 101 cards

(Working a bit with your answer to add a few questions)

Shared models.

Better than I hoped for.
Good news.

Each pc, has it's own Data Folder.
This was each one can have it's own Active and Deactivated clips.
Plus it's own Skin, and Custom Cards...
I usually delete deactivated clips...
Will this bother the other workstation?
Logically it should not...

The Laptop has Two Model folder Paths.
Sometimes Three.
1) the Shared NAS
2) the Default Local location
3) a USB thumb drive

Now that's interesting.

1-Can you have a model let's say locally and on the NAS at the same time?
2- What if the thumb drive is not there? Then you put it back?

I will have to play with this...
Test drive...

I keep multiple REGISTRY files with the different Path setups.
You CAN'T share downloaded Model files between different accounts.

I will pass my turn as to play with the registry this way...
Only have one acount, no problem here.

Thanks for the answer @wildanimal.

Since I have two workstation for iStripper I was hoping to do what @wildanimal is describing.
External disk space connected to the WiFi router.

Thanks for the note @metaladje1952.

Do hope looking at nice girls mooving around on the screen helps in your recovery.
Or at least keep your mind busy.
Get better soon.

If the Models folder is Shared, and you Delete a Model from one PC location, Then the Other PC will Not know it's deleted.
But if it tries to play it, the Clips will not be there and it will just ignore it...

Every so Often, you should do a Rebuild Collection to Take a Full Inventory.

This is true if you Download new cards from One PC, the Other Might not know they are downloaded.

A rebuild Collection puts that PC back into Sync.

Note: Across the Network, the Rebuild can take 10 to 15 minutes... ( 4000 cards )
Just let it do it's thing till it's done...

Now that's interesting.

1-Can you have a model let's say locally and on the NAS at the same time?
2- What if the thumb drive is not there? Then you put it back?

iStripper attempts to Use the Drive with the Most Free Space first.

So it Looks for the card in order of the drives Free size. ( or so that's how my test have shown it to work )
So Yeah, You could have the same card Stored on more than One drive..

New downloads get saved to the drive with the Most free space..
You might have to do some Copy and Delete to put them in a different drive.

For me, I have an external 4TB drive attached to the computer where I download the cards and then on my main PC, I also have an external HDD for th cards.

The I run a sync program once a week, after I have downloaded all that weeks cards, which does:
Copy the files from the downloading PC, to the Main PC
The copies all the files to a network loactaion to make sure I have a full an complete copy in a secure location (NAS drive)

Sounds logical to me and external drive would be first in line.
Ok & noted.

Always thought a rebuild was to do what is say.
Rebuild my collection but from Totem servers.

Do I understand I will have to keep "complete" collection of my cards at all time?
I do have deleted cards in the 650 or so I own. (All clips deleted)

Well... I could just deactivate the cards...

The I run a sync program once a week
I was hoping for an unique external drive to my Wifi router.
Then use a second location for laptop on the road with preferred cards.
Best of both world.
😊

This was each one can have it's own Active and Deactivated clips.

Is there a way to synchronise deactivated cards / clips data?
Trying to add to the best of both world idea.

Thanks for the answers @Wyldanimal & @Cartref, appreciated.

@Serge,

Having an external drive attached to your WiFi router may not work as for iStripper to use it, it must be mapped so that the path can be entered into iStripper settings.

I am not sure how the external drive would be mapped in your network. Additionaly, I am not sure if iStripper's config will accept a UNC path or whether it expects a mapped drive.

I knew once, but I have forgotten, but Wyldanimal will probably know.

@hellboy,

*********************************************************************************************
There are two options for this and I describe these at a high level:
1. Transfer your existing collection via the Change Folder function in the systems settings, or
2. Do the transfer manually by:
a. Creating a new folder in whatever external hard drive that you have set up.
b. Make sure that folder is mapped to a network address.
c. Manually edit the iStripper configuration via Regedit (not recommended unless you have experience with doing this.
d. The manually copy the data files to the new location.

Personally I would recommend the former option.

If you want further details, please post a follow-up message indicating which option you would like to follow.

@Cartref I intend to do some testing this week.

Both with an external drive to the WiFi router and a NAS.
Will see and come back with my result...

Out of curiosity.
Do you sync only the model folder or the data folder also?
A sync of the deactivated cards / clips would be perfect.

Thanks for the answers, appreciated.

What happend to my post?
I replied to this over the weekend...???

Is there a way to synchronise deactivated cards / clips data?
Trying to add to the best of both world idea.

Anyway, Clip Deactivation is done by writting a file to the Models folder called inactive.txt

Dooing it on One PC does not affect the other PC till you do a rebuild Collection.
Just don't deactivate clips from two different PC's without having done a rebuild Collection first.

Rebuild Collection

This takes an Inventory of all the cards and clips

1) it connects to totems Server and Gets an updated copy of your Rights. ( what cards you own )
2) it updates missing files in the Data folders.
3) It scans all the Folders and Sub-folders in the Models and Data paths, to take inventory of what is there.
( and updates the models.lst file with the inactive, deleted, not downloaded cards and clips )

Enabled and Disabled cards are controlled by the Data folder, so Each PC can have it's own set of cards that are Active or not.
( if you are not using a shared set of data folders, which I recommend that you keep separate data folders for each PC )
Cards Marked to be Downloaded are also controlled by the data folders.

A not Downloaded card is Different from a Card Marked to be Downloaded.
Not Downloaded, means you Own it, but have not yet Asked to Downloaded it.
Marked for Download, Means you Asked to Download it, but it hasn't completed yet.
All cards Marked for Download will retry the next time you Start iStripper. and that is controlled by the data folders.

Downloaded Cards, Not downloaded Cards, Inactive Clips
are controlled by the Models folders, So any clip made deactivated on one PC will also be deactivated on the other, after a rebuild collection.

This close the question on sync between workstations.

Rebuild Collection
No need to quote the entire explanation.
Perfect.

Thank's for the explanation @Wyldanimal, appreciated.
Now on me to get this in place.

@Serge,

I do things a little differently to Wyldanimal, I have iStripper with full collections on two main computers and some cards on a couple of laptops, but not full collections (simply not enough disk space).

I a satisfied that the collections are maintained in sync and I have no use for different resolutions for each card.

So for me, I download on one PC, so I have the whole weeks cards, then I sync both PC's using a program called ABC - Synchroniser.

The program sinks the entire VGHD folder (both data & models) with a matching VGHD folder on the external HDD on the other PC. So its a copy of everything.

The second step of the sync, is to sync with a VGHD folder on one of my NAS drives.

By doing it this way, I have three complete copies of my collection on three independent devices, that is at the most only 1 week old.

Problem I have @Cartref is I don't have sufficient disk space on neither of my workstations.
Thus the approach with everything on a NAS.

Couple of cards on the laptop for the road seems interesting.
Favorites.
😊

The program sinks the entire VGHD folder (both data & models)
Download cards on workstation A
Syync with workstation B

Do you still have to do a rebuild?

Will take a look at ABC synchroniser.

Thanks for the note.

@Serge,

I don't have room inside my PC's (well I do with one which is in a high tower, but I had capability issues) so I have an external drive attached to each PC via an external disk caddy and this works well for me.

But yes, after the sync you do need to run a rebuild so that iStriper updates its internal indexes.
