I ask this as i have all of my VirtuaGirl data on my external harddrive as i need all of my laptops memory for work, games etc, I was just wondering is it possible to have most of my cards on my external hard drive and a few cards/duplicates on my laptop memory for when i do not have my hard drive?

Using just the GUI = VG Software Graphical User Interface
NO it is not possible to Split your Collection Between more than One Storage Folder.

It is possible to Change the Location using the GUI, on the Settings / Advance Screen.

There is a another way to do it.
but it requires technical computer experience.

Warning do not attempt this if you are not sure of what to do....

With your EXT hard Drive Connected, and Totem Working..
UnCheck all of the Automatic downloads boxes
UnCheck the Download after quit.
Quit VG

Open registry editor.
Locate the totem registry Branch.
Export it to a file.
It's just a text file when saved.
Edit the file, and remove everything Except the FIle Paths.
Save this as VG-EXT.reg

Now make the New Local Folder
Copy the cards / Duplicates you want to that folder.

Go Back and Edit the VG-EXT.reg file
Change the Models path to match the Local Folder location.
Save this as VG-Local.reg

So now you have to registry files.
Each one only contains the Totem branch Path entries
One has the Path to the External folder
On has the path to the Local folder.

To Update the Registry, all you have to do Is double click
on one of these files.
It will then make the changes to the path.

So if the Ext HD is connected.
Double click on VG-EXT.reg
ok the prompts
Start VG

If the External HD is NOT connected
Double click on VG-Local.reg
ok the Prompts
Start VG

Note: You may have to do a Rebuild All each time..
but that's just because One time you have all the cards, and then you only have a few..

Again, this is not supported by the software.
you are altering the registry each time you do this.
DO NOT attempt this if you don't know what your doing..
Totem is not responsible for any mistakes you might make.

hello @johnbo2008

i can try to prepare a script for that.

you must also have two Data folder, one for the laptop and one for the hardrive externe, i imagine you can in this condition, i made several test and give the result.

lol i want prepare this situation also for me ♥♥♥☺

--

not use the GUI of program in this condition because this option move all the card's and we have not possibility to cancel this move.

--
you must prepare for this situation.

my idea are then to creat two data folder and with one script use the data folder i want. and this data folder correspond with him Models folder.

here one exemple of name folder you can use

C:/Vir/VGHD/Datalaptop for C:/Vir/VGHD/Models
C:/Vir/VGHD/Dataextern for D:/Vir/VGHD/Models of course D letter are a exemple

in this condition we only need to change 2 values and then we can have two collection totaly different.

----

lol sorry for all my edit ♥♥♥☺

sorry my joke Wyld, but your solution are for A.I. ♥♥♥☺

the script look this, is not again finish but for information, i post where i am.

in the file collection.txt you place 4 lignes, that your work after have placed your two collection, you placed 2 first lignes for the laptop localisation and the 2 last lignes for the external drive localisation.

in the folder PRG, i place one system program for ***** to quit VG.

I think you both mis-understood the OP's request..

Same Computer, Not Laptop and / Or Desk top..

Laptop - Full collection on Ext drive.
Same Laptop - partial collection on Local Drive, When External Drive is NOT connected.

You can not use the GUI to move the storage location,
as Alerte points out.
It will try to MOVE all the folders. That's not what is wanted.

Junctions could be a possible solution But a lot of work Not required.

A script from Alerte, can work, But All that Is needed is a Simpe Change to the Registry's
Models Path.

Use one Path setting when Ext Hdd is connected.
Use a Different path when No Ext Hdd is Connected.

my method of Exporting the Totem registry, and editing the file so it only contains the Models Path, is an Easy way to make two simple clickable Desktop Icons.

If you know what your doing, you can Just export the Totem System Branch.
That will save a lot of editing to trim ot down to just the Models path.

Hello i start test, and for the moment all ok, i continu i have again a little problem to solve.

then how do.

i place in one file the location of my two collection.
i copy two time Data folder and i place the show i want. look my exemple the picture one are on my external drive and have all the collection, and the picture 2 are the simulation of laptop with one show for the moment.

i have test to change several time and i not find problem.

my only problem are i not find for made quit the program Virtuagirl_Downloader, here the problem, if we change the location of value when the program Virtuagirl_Downloader work that can be a problem.

have all a nice week, i post the script when i am sur all ok.

with this methode we can have all different collection we want, in the condition we have also the Data folder correspondant, then when we change value, we change Data and Models, if not the program must ajust the Data folders all time we change of collection. I use this methode for my two system, XP and Seven and now i install also this for my laptop, i have again several days of test.

I have one more idea to add to this discussion, expanding on what's been said in the past (and the future):
------
posted by doubleDiamond @Virt4B in a future off-topic thread:

best solution I see is the possibility to use more storage folders like discussed in this thread:
(pointing here, to this thread)
It would be very cool if the software could handle more storage folders on different external drives at the same time.
That would be a great invention for the future of this software cause data will keep on growing...
------
In this thread, @WyldAnimal discusses the possibility of splitting the models folder over 2 hard drives, but it's technical, risky and cumbersome for new users. If I understand correctly, I can see that his example could, in theory, be multiplied to allow for expansion across several HD's, perhaps with a separate desktop icon for each drive. This option still limits access to the clips on only 1 drive at a time, per instance of the VG software. (I don't know if you can run more than 1 instance - not my point here anyway.) It's a work-around to the software. As is the suggestion that I buy a bigger drive each year to replace the one I already have.

Expanding on @Virt4B's thoughts, if Totem would expand the selection box to include the possibility to add several "location of my shows" instead of just one and write all of those locations to the registry. In theory, you could then use several USB drives to save your models and still be able to access all clips seamlessly in one instance of VG. The aim here is to incorporate this idea into an idiot-proof program-controlled spanning of several drives. Then again, maybe that's more trouble for the developers.

(Sorry to dig up old memories by resurrecting this thread... Perhaps someone will adjust my knowledge of the rules of etiquette?)

I've posted a spin-off of this thread to the ideas forum with the title Add Support For Secondary Models Folder. I've included a poll.
