Makes me wonder...

What is the oldest revival?
(Achievement in the making... )

In fact, topics older than 1 year could be automatically deleted.

Please do not do this. It is often useful to refer to old posts - especially to point others to them when they give detailed answers to questions. They would be even more useful if the forum search function worked properly.

It might be more useful if whenever someone tried to make a post to a long dormant thread a dialogue box popped up pointing out that the thread was dormant and requiring a confirmation that the poster wanted to revive it.

That wouldn't stop the spammers.

I think something like a lock on a topic that hasn't been posted to in a year would be a good solution. Not delete, but archive, in a way.

Nothing would stop the spammers, but a pop-up dialog box would help people (often enthusiastic newcomers) who unwittingly post in a dormant thread. In my opinion spamming is not a significant problem here, certainly not big enough to warrant the general shutdown of old threads.

@Philours

There was exactly one "on topic" reply 10 years ago, two more 4 days ago and the remaining posts have all been a perfectly valid follow up to a post pointing out that the thread died 10 years ago. The problem is not that these posts are off topic, but that the system does not provide good support for this kind of natural way for discussions to progress.

@TheEmu,

Pour ce sujet : j'aime les piercings. 😍

Yes, it would be better if the trhreads titles better reflected their content. But, unfortunately, natural conversations (which these forum discussions resemble) do not behave that way and wander all over the place. If the participants in a thread are happy to see it wander then that is fine by me, if particpants object and ask for off topic discussions be moved elsewhere that is also fine.

As I said previously the problem is that the forum software does not, in my opinion, provide a good match to the ways in which the participants want to use the forums. There are much better ways of handling this sort of thing, for example the software used by a site that I read every day

https://www.realworldtech.com/forum/?roomid=1

This organises posts in a tree rather than a set of simple lnear threads. Rather than a posts just being appended to the end of a thread they are replys to some particular post. You can then view them sorted by time, or subject, or as a tree structure. In each of these cases you can limit the display to show you only posts from a range of dates and to highlight those that are most recent and those that you have already read. Because it allows you to give a new title to a post you can see when the subject is changed but still have visibility of what the post was replying to. This allows you to easily follow individual sub-threads whether they be on or off topic. I find this to be much more useful way of organising a discussion forum.

It is questionable whether other topics that are only filled with spam need to be left open
In my Opinion revive and keep further alive a 10 Year old Topic, could also classified as Spam 😉
It's a public Forum and still the Team and the Moderators are deciding what's happening here,
as you can see here.

Their comments must be deleted because of their ***** of speach If these comments are not insulting someone, or the Totem's team, they don't have to be deleted. It's the rule of this forum.
So no need to waste Time on the Forum with unimportant Things like Piercings for example,
just my Opinion. So everybody should feel Free to do what he/she will to do here,
because it's everyones personal decision and maybe waste of Time, just like mine in this moment.

I disagree here.

Real, active moderation would stop the spammers. All they need is a warning that someone is watching and it's against the rules.

People have been temporarily banned for less.

Yes, you are right - active moderation, i.e. human intervention, would stop them, but as I said I don't think that there is currently any significant problem. The few cases of real spamming and rule breaking seem to have been shut down pretty quickly in the past.

It was the question of how long topics remain open or can be closed.
That is a Question for the Moderators/Teammembers.
Or whether you put topics that are older than 10 years on standby and reactivate them.
Like i was saying, when someone is reviving such a Topic, it's his/her personal choice for waste of Time.
I didn't revive the subject of piercings
I didn't say that, but it was my own fold i thought on another Topic with a similar Subject, so please forget that :)
The point was, what can be improved or changed
Things can always be improved, but our task as a User/Customer is to enjoy the Girls,
don't being rude to them, and stick further to the T&C and everything should be fine.
In the end, anyway, the team decides what can be improved
That's true 😉

Absolutely correct. Sometimes the revival will result in others joining in, in which case it was not a waste of time, while at other times it will be ignored wasting only the resurrectionist's time and only microscopically affecting anyone else.

This has been an on and off complaint over many years and given how it is acknowledged that there search functionality within the forum is not the best (and it isn't), then we cannot be surprised when members, especially newbies, ask questions that have been raised before.

Nor because question was asked 10 years ago, doesn't mean its not a valid question today.

I can assure that the mods have enough to do without growing at someone has asked the same question, or found that same question after a search, especially if it hasn't been adequately answered, to spend time policing this.

If anyone would like to disagree with me, feel free to do so, but it will probably be ignored.

Cheers
