Many members are going to be asking this question.
What VR Headset should I get?

With So many options, there is no difinitive answer.

To reach some sort of answer,
we must ask a few questions..

What do you want to use the Headset for?
  • ) just VR porn
  • ) Just VR videos including VR Porn
  • ) I want to do basic gaming as well
  • ) I want the Full VR with 6 DOF experience.
  • ) What budget do you have

Once you have asked yourself and know the answers then you can narrow down your choices.
This is an Excelent Video to Watch..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzYf3bGmyFU

for me, it boils down to Two, on a Budget of under $500
$100 or Less
A CardBoard based headset using a Cellphone for Just VR 180 porn / other VR movies.

$500 or Less
The Oculus Quest: Both VR 180 movies and True VR Gaming...
I agree with the Video review, Why buy the Rift S, when the Quest offers Both Wireless and Wired, or More.

$1500 or Less
There is the 3rd for High End VR Gaming..

At around $200 to $250
There is Windows Mixed Reality on the entry level,
but to get the best experience Windows Mixed Reality, you are again at or Near that $500 price point
So just get the Quest.

Hope this and the Video Helped...

Oh,

For anyone with a Playstation 4 or 4 Pro
The PSVR is Still a Great Choice and can be found for Under $200
It's better than Entry Level....

But I'd Still get the Quest, just because it has Wireless stand alone use...

If you never tried VR, I strongly suggest to try your mobile phone together with a cardboard or something similar like Samsung's Gear VR, to get a feeling for VR and rate how much it's worth to spend.
Many VR videos for me seem to be similar to 3D videos. While the video is more immersive with glasses than on a 3D TV, the action is still concentrated on one spot.

In my opinion the Quest is the best allrounder, too. But if you are sure of your use case, other models might be a better choice. I've read the Rift is more comfortable to wear. Having only the Quest, it's true that it could fit better or the weight could be balanced better.

I have something similar to an cardboard for 20€ and use my phone with vlc-player. Works well and is good enough for just watching 3d/VR movies.

Yes, try the Demo's to make sure your Model Phone will Play the Video files.
Not All Phones are capable of playing the VR180 content.

VR180 video's are Not TRUE VR.

They are Static based on where the Camera was Positioned.
You Can't Walk around the Content to see it from different Views.
You can turn / tilt your Head to See what the Camera captured outside your Frame of View.

VR 180 is just a more Immersive 3D static movie, the Camera is in a Fixed location.

Oculus Go should be added to this list. Price is down to $150 now. Doesn't technically need a PC and does have one hand controller, a huge step up from smart phone options and not as expensive as the Oculus Quest. Good for those who want a passive experience, like watching video, but don't really care about gaming.

$150 version only has 32 GB of memory, $200 version 64 GB, which isn't much video content. So, instead of using on-board memory, I personally think it works well to use a PC media server, like Plex, that will allow wireless access to video/VR content on PC hard/USB drives via Oculus Go Skybox app. Could alternatively get a portable media server device to access content similarly from portable USB drives, without a PC.

I would point out "as mentioned above" it depends on what you want to use it for.... if only to watch videos (porn) the quest is fine, but if you are into gaming as well the Rift S is a better option. The quest is limited on its games due to power/performance. The Rift S is not because it is hooked to your PC and can handle VR games because its backed by the power of your PC and not limited to the ability of the headset. The con for the Rift is, its not as mobile and you are tethered to your PC. The quest is mobile, but not as powerful. Again, depends on what you want to use it for. I have both and use the Rift more but the Quest is fine as well. VR is fun, its amazing to see how far tech has come...

Do not forget to load HEVC video extension to get h265 video to play !
Made the switch to Oculus Rift S from the cheap Destek V5 (Daydream type). $399 vs $50.
Need not explain how many ways Desktek was a ***** !
Only problem on Rift S was getting h265 (HEVC) videos to play.
No mention anywhere that HEVC video extension needed (except in obscure forum posts).
Installed via Microsft Store and everythings good now.
Had purchased long time ago but after Win10 clean install you need go back to Store and reload.

On topic, highly recommend Rift S, beautiful video !

Edit: HEVC comes free if iTunes installed or 99cents at MS Store. Comes in other software too, only MS too cheap to put it in Win10.
