The Metric system is all Powers of 10.
The Binary system is all Powers of 2.
When we talk about bits and bytes, there are two systems, sometimes very *****.
take Hard drives for Instance.
When you go to Purchase a Hard drive, It's Size, 2 TB for example.
Is quoted using powers of 10, or Powers of 1000 bytes.
But the Data that gets stored on the Hard drive is all Binary.
So we work in Powers of 2, or 1024 bytes.
A 2 TB hard drive, 2,000,000,000,000 bytes will Not Store 2 TB of Binary Data.
It will Store 1.81899 TebiBytes of binary data.
This is why the Formated Size of a Hard drive, always seems to be smaller than the Advertised size of the Hard Drive you purchased.
Powers of 1000's = 1024's
Power of 1- KiloByte = KibiByte 1000 = 1024
Power of 2- MegaByte = MebiByte 1000 x 1000 = 1024 x 1024
Power of 3- GigaByte = GibiByte 1000 x 1000 x 1000 = 1024 x 1024 x 1024
Power of 4- TeraByte = TebiByte 1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 = 1024 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024
Power of 5- PetaByte = PebiByte 1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 = 1024 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024
