Hi...I just want to make sure I have the process right for transfering my 590 shows to my new pc next month
So I install the software on the new pc, and then replace the model and data folders with my backup folders
from my external drive. is there anything else I need to do to make this painless?

You should probably restore your backups before you install, otherwise you might start auto downloading.

I just went through this. It won't auto download your cards. You're doing the right thing moving the data. It is much faster. Also some cards have been removed due to legal issues. If you have some you cannot download them again. I positioned the database in a different location on my new computer. Go to settings -> Advanced -> Change the storage folder and put in the new location. Then right click on Synchronize with server and select "rebuild all".

I did lose stuff and I don't know a remedy. First, all of my settings were lost. I don't think you can do much about this. But if I could do it over, I would sit down with a notebook and write down every setting I have. I wish there was a way to migrate settings but there is not. You have ask a moderator to remove your old installation from the database of installations. Performing the uninstall procedure on your old system does not do this. This really renders the uninstall procedure very much worse than useless. Not only did I not remove the record of my installation from Totem's database, but I lost the ability to examine my old settings. Thus I urge you to not perform the uninstall procedure. This was my worst error.

The worst hit I took was the loss of my database of music files under the sound & music setting. I only had 20 or 25 songs that I had added. I don't know where VG stores the mp3's and I wish I did. Yes, I have all of the original mp3 file in my music collection. But I am back to square one in selecting a few songs for VG to use. Each time I add a song, I will copy it to a my-music folder I created under the VG storage folder. Then next time I migrate to a new system I will have an easy way to migrate the music too.

And, Totem, shame on you for not making this easier.

To Start with a fresh Install.
Install it,
Register with your existing username and Password
go to advance, turn off all the auto download selections
turn off Download after Quit
Quit VG

Copy your existing files, or plug in your HDD.
Copy your ORIG DATA folder to the New Computer.

If you don't copy your Orig Data folder, The New install, in the short time it was running has marked Many cards to be downloaded.
so even though you copy your cards, when you restart VG it will attempt to redownload.

I Have VG installed on 3 or 4 computers, but only one EXT HDD with all my cards on it.

Here is what I do this everytime I move my External HDD to a different Computer.
I manually make my change directly In the registry.

Plug my EXt HDD in the Other Computer.
it becomes a drive letter.
for Example it is assigned letter K:\ ( it's different on each computer )
I have a single Sub folder for VG
MYVGHD
in there I have Subfolders for my Different Usernames ( I have three for testing plus this one )
so my path to my Models is
K:\MYVGHD\WyldAnimal\Models

My Main and Data paths are local to the Computer's C:\ drive
My Models are on the Ext HDD.
in my registry:

HKCU / Software / Totem / VGHD / System
MainPath:
C:\Users\WyldAnimal\AppData\Local\vghd\bin\
DataPath:
C:\Users\WyldAnimal\AppData\Local\vghd\Data\
ModelsPath:
K:\MyVGHD\WyldAnimal\Models\

restart VG
go to Advance
Right Click on Sync with Server
Select rebuild all

I have never lost a card doing this.

The Initial Install, is what will make VG try to redownload the cards.
By Deleting the NEW Data folders, and restoring your ORIG Data folders in it's place,
you will avoid this.

But you also have to turn off all the Automatic Download settings.

Thanks. I found vghd\data\musics and it contains only the official vg mp3. My guess is that the uninstall procedure which I stupidly did erased all my music.

**edit**

I am pretty sure my backup was done prior to the uninstall. Even my backup drive has only that one mp3. Oh well. it won't take too long to build a new list of music.

Most external Music is only stored as the PATH to the external file.
It's not Copied Directly into the
VGHD\Data\Music path.

that would be why you only have one Song File in the Folder, But had many different songs that were used.
All the other songs were stored only as the path to the song.

So in your Backup.
there shoudl have been a file
musiclist.mpl

you can open that file with Notepad
and then you can see the Paths to the Music files

Just reading your post and wondering how or why you installed VG on 3 or 4 computers.( I Have VG installed on 3 or 4 computers, but only one EXT HDD with all my cards on it.)

Asfar as I know we only can run the programme on 2 computers. That is with the same account.

So do you have more accounts, or did you used a trick?

No tricks involved..

as one of the forum Moderator's, I have a couple extra installs for Testing on Different Platforms. ( all for the same Account, and that is why I move my EXT HDD from Computer to Computer. I don't have to download the same cards over and over. Move the HDD, rebuild all. Makes it Easy. )
at one time I was testing on XP, (64 and 32 bit of Windows 7, Windows 8 and 8.1) ( now I had switched from 8.1 to 10 for Windows 10 I did the Upgrade from 8.1 instead of a clean Install of 10 )
I don't have a MAC computer yet, so I haven't gotten into testing on the MAC.

So I only use them to alpha and beta test, I don't use all 3 or 4 at the same time...

And Yes, per the Terms and Conditions, you are allowed to use the Software on Two Different computers.

Thanks for your Question.
