Lloydn,

I did some experimenting a while back. If you have your large size setting over about 80% and you don't have the "Don't exceed 100% of the source clips" checkbox on in Advanced Setting then a 1080p card will be scalled up to fit you size setting. A 3K card on the same screen will be scaled down. Since scaling a 3K card takes a lot more processing than scaling 1080p card you need more processing power. If you have the processing power, a 3K card will look a bit better than a 1080p card. On the other hand, if your large size setting is less then 75% there is no benefit from the 3K version of a card since you're simply scaling it down to the size of a 1080p.

The key is that a 3K card scaled down to less than the "natural" size of a 1080p card won't look any better than the 1080p, but will take a lot more computer power to play.

You can do a simple test: Turn the "Don't exceed 100%" control on and off with a card playing in large mode. If the card changes size, it's being scaled up by the software and a 3K card would look a little better given sufficient processing power.

the KEY here is, if you are using the 3K cards with no performance issue, then by all means continue to ues them..

But if you're trying to use the 3K cards, on a 1080 size to 1200 size screen, and you are experiencing performance issues, well then most likely you've hit the max of your CPU and should consider downloading the 1080p or 720p cards instaead.

Re-sizing from 3K down to 1080p needs a lot of CPU. and If you don't have it, why struggle with it..
Better to download the Clip size that Best works with your Screen / Hardware.

but to answer your question.
NO, you don't have to have a 4K screen to use the 3K clips.

even on a 768 high screen, if you've got enough CPU, yu can use the 3K clips, and let them be re-sized to fit your 768 size screen..

Will you see any significant difference between the 3K vs the 720p on the 768 screen?
I doubt it..
