Thanks to Totems new rules my speeds have risen from 50-80kbs/s to the 200kbs with 400kbs/s showing up frequently - lovely. Downloaded a Kami card card the other day at 300 - 400kbs/s, on the strength of the speed I purchased a Susan card immediately afterwards and what was the download speed, 12 - 15kbs/s, a new record low. After 15 min's waiting for speed to improve I turned the net off for 10 min's and reconnected the net with a 100 - 150kbs/s download speed. I have seen this occur several times between card downloads since. Anyone got a guess as to why?

Vic48 when you connect to the net you recieve packets (bits of data) and these are requested through lots of different servers. Depending where your requests are routed through will get you a variable download speed. Busy server = slow download. Turning off the net cancelled the request and when you tried again it was a different server.

I guess you were downloading something else and using all your upload bandwidth. When you disconnected and reconnected, it broke the other download. So VG had more capacity to respond when packets arrived. (IP needs to send confirmation).

Or your ISP was throttling your connection. The disconnect was enough to reset your counter, so you got more capacity.

I think really it just goes to show that there are many variables, any one of which could be the cause and it can very difficult to know for sure.

I know going to your profile from EU to US (or back again) can get you a different server which may help the speed. But see my post on todays releases, a different server may not have the content you want.
