Is there anyway I can control my download speeds, I am happy with my 650-700 kb/sec
but I would like to be able to restrict because when it is maxing it is almost impossible to load web pages ?

Hi Worzel, a VGHD watching head then, must be bored of Aunt Sally...

Doesn't look like it with VGHD itself, only upload speeds for p2p. I can see the use of wanting to limit download speed although I've never got anywhere near those speeds or any that have restricted web pages opening to date.

Maybe a reasonable product idea suggestion though if it hasn't already been asked for.

Try a Bandwith Shaper such as this one.

Hi Worzel,

I have limited BW too and so encounter the same problem with the new VG_downloader. It has a tendency to monopolize all available bandwidth on my 1 mbps broadband 'lite' connection. I suggested a throttle built into the software in this thread (

), but it didn't catch on. I suppose most people don't have to deal with slow connections.

Did you try WA's suggestion? If so, how did it work? I didn't know such products existed, but I'm off to d/l and install it now.

WA, I tip my hat to your knowledge and expertise. Thank you!

My experience is that VG uses between 80 and 90 percent of my available bandwidth.
It doesn't use it all...
But I have a 12 mbps connection so that still leaves me with 1.2 to 2.0 mbps for browsing and other stuff.

If you are starting with a DSL 768k or 1.54m connection then using up 80 percent doesn't really leave much for other tasks.
I don't thing the bandwidth shaper will provide much help there.
But I guess you could set it to limit it to about 50% instead of using 90%

I think the idea behind the downloader is to get the card as fast as possible.

Yeah, I understand that they want to make the downloader so that it gets the cards ASAP, and Totem's developers have made great strides in that regard. The last couple of downloaders have been very good at this. It used to be that it would stall, or not use much of the available bandwidth, but that has been overcome with the recent relases. And in the past, if I was downloading from another site or streaming video, the downloader would often stall then too.

The problem is now the opposite for me though. When I am downloading cards, I cannot download from other sites and very often, pages will not load. I d/l'd that app you recommended last night, but haven't installed it yet. If I can limit the VG_downloader to about 50% of the BW when I am doing other tasks, the problem will be solved. Like you said, most people have 10mbps connections or better, so it's not too much of a problem if the d/l uses 90% of their connection. But with DSL or cable 'lite' (like I have), 90% of the BW cripples the connection for anything else. So, I still wish that they would put a slider on the downloader so that it would be possible to limit the BW used within the GUI itself.

Cheers!
